Need help on our 68 Cutlass "Harmonic Balancer and timing tab"

Our harmonic balancer is bad and the timing tab is damaged on our 68 Cutlass with a 350. Does the timing tab bolt to the block? And can you get them from somewhere. Where would be the best place to get the balancer and timing tab? The outer balancer ring came loose from the inner and the outer ring went towards the block and from what the mechanic could see, we need a balancer and a timing tab...so I need to order asap. Any help would be great, thanks, Troy

You can either get a good used or rebuilt balancer. The timing tab bolts to the front of the timing cover, two bolts. But you do have to remove the balancer to remove the two bolts for the timing tab. There's lots of us here who have good used timing tabs. Or you can purchase a repop from one of the vendors.

Troy, since you said you need it right away I'd encourage you to create a parts wanted thread and purchase good used ones from a member here. If your near the West Coast I've got them both. But if your on the East Coast it would be quicker to purchase them from a member near you. John

I was looking for a new one, but would buy a used or rebuilt on if needed. Doesn't anyone sell new harmonic balancers for olds?

Dorman sells one, but there were some old threads saying their fit wasn't very good.

Damper Doctor in Northern California used to sell them on ebay. Here's contact information for them:

There may be some aftermarket ones for performance applications, but I don't know enough about that to help you with a source. John

I just checked with Fusick, my favorite Oldsmobile repop company. They don't have them on the shelf but will also rebuild yours.

Well, if you bought one local and it was too loose at least you could take it back.

Here's one of the threads I was trying to remember...

I don't know if I would trust a 40yo rubber joined part, I have I free one I will ship to anyone that wants one.

I replaced my damper w the dayco one only a few more dollars than the dorman piece and seems like it's well made

Like John said the timing tab is either used or vendors like fusick or eBay would be a source
