72 cutlass rear bumper grommet installation

these are the grommets behind the license plate. They seem too large for the slotted holes, I tried using Dawn to lubricate, but don't want to tear them. Any idea on how to install? They do NOT have a hole in the center of the grommet.

Shouldn't be difficult. Are these what you are talking about? They are actually called license plate bumpers. Usually you do need some type of lubricant to make them install easier, but might you possibly have the wrong ones for your bumper?

I find it easier to pull them through from the backside then pushing from the front. When you push, the rubber expands against the opening in the bumper and makes it almost impossible to get in, but whey you pull the rubber stretches, making the insert portion thinner and it slips in easier. When you pull it from the backside, also push from the front to help it along.

Lightbulb rear license plate grommet

Dude, I can't even come close to pulling them from the backside because the bumpers on the car & there is very little room to access it. Sooo, I just shaved a little off of each side of those tabs of the grommet & viola it worked fine. Nice & tight too!. Thank you for tip though.
