1970 Cutlass Column Gear Shifter Questions

On my 1970 Cutlass when I go to shift into drive (or any gear for that matter) it doesn't move the orange indicator in the gauge. The indicator just stays at park. I was told that it's a cable that's probably unplugged. Is this likely the case?

Thanks for any help

You need a chassis service manual. The shifter indicator is attached to the the bowl on the column that turns with the shifter lever. Probably loose or the screw is gone, came unclipped. Take off the plastic lower column cover cover and you should be able to get to it.
A cable?

Thanks for the helpful information and the illustration Bluevista! You're right I do need a chassis manual. Off to ebay to order one.

I had the same problem on my car. This is what I found. I was able a buy complete setup from CO member. I could have glued it, but the spring that keeps the needle from vibrating was missing on mine.
