1970 1971 1972 Cutlass 442: Console, Shifter, Floor Shift Steering Column and Speedo
All parts have been sold. Thanks!
NOTE: Now Selling Console Only....see post #25 for updated photos. Asking $250. Thanks
Selling my Oldsmobile Cutlass / 442 automatic console with shifter and cable, a floor shift steering column, a floor shift speedo and a new trans bracket for a TH350. Everything is in great shape and ready to bolt in. No cracks, breaks or broken hinges. I think the wood grain is correct for '72 but I'm really not sure on that.
I bought this complete set up for a car that I recently sold. Console and column are green, as pictured. I will also include ~ 1.5 cans of color matched green paint for the 1972 Cutlass if you'd like to paint these items. They can be bolted into a driver as is or they can be painted to match any car.
Please let me know if you have any questions or need any specific pictures. Asking $495 / offer, or will separate. Trade offers also welcome. I have over $600 in these parts but they have to go. Make me an offer! Thanks for looking

I'm getting a lot of questions on individual prices. It's hard for me to price because I bought most of it as a package deal but here are my asking prices, all would be plus shipping:
Shifter - $125
Console - $275
Steering Column - $125
Speedo - $40
NOS Trans Bracket - $25
That adds up to $590 which is still less than what I have in it. It seemed like a good price when I was buying it........not so sure now.

Quick question....how can I ship this steering column? I'm not sure if a cardboard box would make it. I'm thinking a wooden box might be best but that's going to be heavy and probably expensive. Maybe cardboard with a lot of cardboard padding inside...........any ideas?
Would fed ex be the cheapest for something like this? Seems like they're pretty good for the large / heavy stuff compared to UPS or USPS.

Your right on on both accounts. Use FedEx for larger, heavier items. Way cheaper than any other option. Been shipping guitars, large items with them since 97'. Price wise they are the way to go by far on larger , heavier items.
And you don't need a wooden crate to ship it. Use appropriate size box so you can use styro peanuts or bubble wrap and pack it like a tank would run over it. That's what I do. Guy on the other end will appreciate it too that you took your time to package it right. You'll be fine. And remember fedex calculate size of box as much as weight of it. So I always try to fine perfect box so it doesn't cost more than it should. Wasted space box wise will cost you.

I work in shipping yay .... Make sure you pad the part good , and maybe put something over or around the part in a couple of places , so the box wont get crushed either . They ( ups , fed ex ) tend to throw things around at the warehouse . Whatever you do , don't put fragile on the box , or it will get broke .

Word from experience! When you ship that column put a spray can lid or a small 2x4 with a large enough hole in it so the shaft is protected. Tape it to the bottom over the shaft that comes out of the bottom to protect it in case the shipper drops it! I had one I shipped and when it arrived at the purchaser the lower shaft was crushed up into the column. The next one I shipped I taped a 2x4 with a hole to the bottom to take the punishment instead of the shaft and it arrived safely. Someone suggested a spray can lid would probably work as well and be lighter for shipping costs.
Make sure its insured properly as well.

I have a question for you guys. I'm not at all familiar with steering columns and I just want to make sure that this is, in fact, a floor shift column. Please see the picture below. Part of the column, just about where a shift lever would go, rotates to move an arm at the bottom of the column. I just can't think of what that could be??

Do not pack the steering column with foam packing peanuts. Use bubble wrap. Your customer will be happier and the bubble wrap will keep the column more stationary in the box.
X 2 on protecting the shaft with a spray paint cap.

just wanted to be sure, thanks. Kind of funny that I was having a conversation recently with a friend of mine that had a 75 Cutlass about 20 years ago. I remember asking him if his steering column rotated when he shifted at the console. He said it didn't but I think I was right!

The part that is rotating is the part where the shift lever would join the column if it was column shift.
This part is connected through a tube and then an arm and linkage to the transmission linkage.
When this part is in the correct position, Park, ( or reverse on a stick) then it will allow the key to be removed.
You're right , floor and column shift columns are almost the same except for the fore-mentioned part.

Well that all makes perfect sense. You'd want to use the same parts that are in the column of a column shift car....NSS, ignition lock, steering wheel lock, and even turn signals and hazards for that matter.
I would have learned all that if I ever got the console installed!

I was able to get the column packed up and I think it will work pretty well.
I found a nice, heavy duty box that my son's scooter came in and I had saved. I used heavy, thick cardboard pieces to go over the shafts on both ends and to support the column in the middle. I also used the thick cardboard packing around and under the column. I cut down the box and filled with peanuts (sorry about that ) and put on the lid with lots of shipping tape and some masking tape to be safe. I am able to shake the box and not hear any movement, so I think we're OK.
