Age Old Issue
Age Old Issue
Was unsure which area of forum was adequate. Thought I would start here.
Put an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and Holley Carb on my 350 (1972 Cutlass S). Put an aftermarket air cleaner on top. Now stock hood will not close with this height cleaner.
I understand that the stock cleaner sits down on the carb. I assume this is for clearance.
The issue is that I do not want to inhibit the volume of air being supplied to the engine by installing a lower profile cleaner.
What are the typical solutions to this problem (aside from dealing with a restricted flow)?

You need a drop base aftermarket air cleaner.
Here's one:

The air cleaner will sit lower on the carburetor to give you more hood clearance. If this doesn't give you enough clearance you will have to go to a different style filter.

Yeah, you can get that with or without the Summit logo. I bought one a year or two ago without the logo when I installed a Summit carburetor. Eventually I went back to the stock air cleaner because I liked that design better.
Also, I suggest adding a K&N lid to it or the lid/main element kit combo. The drop base (depending on its part number) may require a real thin filter element, IMO not enough air coming in(such as the case with the vette). The lid will ensure enough air.
Check out our vette with the lid.

Thanks. I had to do something as after so many years on the humid Gulf Coast the chrome was pitted and peeling. I sanded the lid to remove as much of the pitting and peeling as possible, sprayed it with gold engine paint, then added the decal. Later, I painted over the black insert on the hold down nut with gold paint as well so it matched.
