Wow I like those trains.
John, I love the looks of that quad receiver. I am sitting here in my easy chair and looking at my Sansui G5500. I was over in Yokosuka, Japan on a West Pac cruise in the Navy in 1979. I went to the Navy Exchange and ordered that receiver, a huge set of speakers and a cassette player/ recorder. I also ordered a Pioneer Super Tuner under dash AM/FM cassette player and a super set of 6 speakers and amp for a car. It was supposed to be a great deal cuz they were made in Japan and they shipped them directly to my Mom's house. When I was discharged in Dec. 79, I set up that stereo in the basement at Mom's and it was awesome! However the only thing left now is the Sansui receiver. The speakers dry rotted and flaked apart. The cassette deck quit. The very amazing ( at the time) car stereo was put in the 68 F85 4 door I bought as a beater to get around with. Then I bought a 73 Buick Regal which was a nice car and put the whole system in it, sold the F85 to a guy for $100. or something with the 6 holes cut in door panels etc. Then the stereo setup later got sold in the Buick. That car system was just amazing- bass and treble like you never heard in a car back then. I remember hearing Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend" in the Exchange playing thru it and that sold me. Wow, I haven't thought about all that in a while. OH, and the Sansui receiver still works though I really have thought of getting a newer stereo system, It just doesn't pull in stations that well and needs the big wire antenna, etc. But it sure looks cool!!

Today was stressful at work, but, boss was not there, so oddly calm as well. I found a unit of audio equipment I want on ebay and bought it. I have a plan of eventually turning my stereo into a quadraphonic system. There's three ways to do it: use a four channel receiver, use a two channel receiver with extra rear line outs to another amp (sometimes called a 2+4 amp I think), or use a special preamp that talks to your main receiver and another amp for the back channel. I like overpowered Marantz receivers, and I have my eye on a similarly overpowered amp for the back, but today I found the Marantz 4000 Quadradial showing up on Ebay after 6 months or so of looking every few days and picked it up. This is that preamp.

It sits in a tape loop of your receiver and uses that for any 2 channel source you send its way, and also sends the front signal back that way. It has straight line outs to the rear amp. It can take your two channel source, four channel source like a tape deck with 4 tracks, Matrix CD-4 four channel quadraphonic, and it can also play SQ and QS style quadraphonics, and also duplicate stereo to the back, or do something called Vari-Matrix which will give you either Sum (L+R) or Difference (L-R) to the back. Also can adjust balance L/R in front, in back, and front to back.

Anyway, lots of function, and you can always shut it off for just stereo. Long time before I will use it as I still need the back amp, more speakers, and find room for it, but it's a rare piece so I went for it. Not here yet, this is a pic from the ad. Also has snazzy Vu meters too.
John - Your Mom sounds like an incredible baker. I love all those desserts you mentioned she makes, with the exception of the persimmon pudding, which I've never had..

The Marantz 4000 Quadradial sounds like an amazing piece of audiophile equipment. Wow, it sure has a ton of functionality/versatility. I absolutely love listening to music on high end audiophile equipment, come to think of it, I love my music period. Unforunately, my wife isn't as in to listening to music as me,, and we don't currently have the space in our living room to really set-up and enjoy a high end system. I still have my old Harmon Kardon amp and receiver in storage in the basement, along with my Sansui turntable. The Sansui linear tracking turntable was unique for it's time (~1983) because it could be programmed to play the tracks in a specific order. The real story here is, that I used to have 2 top of the line large Koss studio speakers, of Koss stereo headphones fame. The story is in how I got them. When I was in undergrad at Albion College in Michigan, I lived in a frat house for 2-years with John C. Koss Jr., the son of the founder. Johnny as we called him, was willing and able to get any of his frat brothers any piece of Koss stereo equipment at cost, which was usually 50% or more cheaper than what the retail price was.

Good luck getting your complete system up and going in the future, it's going to be killer!

. . .

Greg - Great story about being able to pick up all the stereo equipment while you were in the Navy, and that the Sansui receiver is still working! Here's a pic of that unique Sansui linear tracking turntable I bought in '83 that is still functional. It has a sensor beam that can read the empty space between tracks that allows you to program the order in which they were played. Kinda silly really since there aren't many tracks on an LP, but really unique back in the day!

Since we don't really have the space for a large stereo system, back in 2006 I went out and got a Crosley self contained AM/FM radio, CD player, and phonograph, designed to look like a vintage '40's or '50's radio. It puts out a nice sound for no bigger than the speakers are, but why I really wanted it was for something that would go with the decor of the house and not take up a bunch of space, and had the capability of throwing one of my old LP's on it when I'm in the mood.

Well, a 90-year old Capt. Kirk, is finally boldly going where no 90-year old man has gone before, into outer space. I think it's pretty cool that's he's getting to go up, fitting really, for the star of a show that made us young boys dream of space travel 55-years ago!

I have been obsessively looking at vintage receivers listed on FB Marketplace for months. Haven't yet pulled the trigger on anything, as people have lost their damn minds and are selling vintage 70's and 80's gear for top dollar. Ideally, I will find a black-faced Marantz or Pioneer, but have also been checking out Realistic, Fisher, MCS, and Lafayette. But, I'll stop here, as there is a whole other thread for vintage audio equipment here in the Clubhouse section.

Marantz has always made quality sounds devices. I never owned a Marantz, many friends did. I have owned a slurry of very top-brand quality receivers, amplifiers, tape decks, equalizers, speakers, etc. Far more than I could spend time discussing in a post. BTW, I've always been a Mesa Boogie and and Fender amplifier person. My guitars vary but I like my vintage sound - in both guitars and amplifiers (full warm hot tubes for me). I've always been a big fan of MOSFET transistors & circuitry, as well. It's fun reading about your guys posts RE: sound devices.

I grabbed another gallon of persimmons this morning - arriving early (6:45am) to the club. This morning's batch wasn't as dirty and squished as yesterday's. I am so tired to playing mediocre (41/41) golf; although, I'm thankful I can play - the rotator cuff tear is healing, very, very slowly.

I may have hurt mine, too. It is BETTER, but not good yet, it's 50% better, and seems to have taken a month.

Hi everyone.

Another beautiful day that is getting wasted. Work was okay, but we ended with about 30 very large main wheels and I could hardly drag my *** out to the car to go home. Got home and took care of Tiger and then it was naptime.

When I was in high school my girlfriend's parents had some pretty high end stereo equipment. They would use it for this local amateur bad they helped out. Their favorite piece of equipment was "the Marantz." They talked about this thing like it was one of the family. I think it was some sort of amp as well as a cassette deck. It was black. The mother was also proud of the Time Windows. These were speaker towers she had in the corners of the room, but you could hear them the same anywhere in the room. It was pretty cool. Why she called them that I don't know. Turned out to be an odd family.

How much is Captain Kirk ante-ing up for this space trip? You might recall when Mr. Scotty died years ago some of his ashes were sent up into space. Supposedly smuggled onto the International Space Station. Not sure I believe that story but heck it sounds good.

Koda why did your neighbor stop at only mowing a portion of your yard? Heck if he would have done all of it he would have done you a favor. Are you sure his disdain rests with the lawn, or does he have some other beef with you and it manifests itself with the lawn mowing.

So I talked to a guy a couple weeks ago who is (I presume) selling a 96 Impala SS. I had one of those when they were new and I loved it. Had to sell it when I started paying my own way. He tells me he's at a race in Alabama and will get home Saturday and send me pictures. Don't hear anything. I call him Monday and he's terse with me and says he's going out of town until next Tuesday, which was two days ago, and he's got my number and will send me pictures. I said how about I just run up there and see it when you're home. No he's gonna send me pictures. Well Tuesday has come and gone and no pictures. I'm not calling him again. The car needs some work but is an excellent price, he's the original owner, blah blah and all of that it sounds like what I'm looking for. My friend says, he's not a motivated seller. Boy what an understatement.

Okay I'm gonna hit the sack early, not necessarily to go in early, but because I am beat. I gotta do this two more times, three if we work Saturday. I might as well, the lead has ruined the whole week for me might as well include Saturday. So have a good evening everyone.

Mike - I heard on the news that Shatner's ride was free courtesy of Bezos, because Bezos was a big Star Trek fan. What "courtesy flight" translates into is, a huge publicity ploy. The press was all over it all day long!

Mike, he's an alright dude, a little weird. At least I talk to him and his wife. The one's on the north (on the other side) don't speak to me and are reclusive nerds flying a rebel flag (the star wars rebels). The whitest of white people.

But this guy, he's ok. He stopped at my driveway. Problem is, I cut my grass high, and this guy scalps his. I will have words with him sometime over it. I don't know why people have to annoy me; I'm much bigger than most, drive powerful vehicles, can be seen loading an arsenal into a vehicle when going to the range, and I keep to myself. I don't know how many more "Keep your fuckery at the property line" indicators I have to give off. Maybe I need some fat, dopey Rottweiler who's really a teddy bear and just looks mean to hang out with me. My grass was about a foot tall, so I guess he had a point.

I'll update the audio thread when I get time with my expanded stuff.

Been busy playing golf , cooking and believe it or not taking my friend's son tubing

The super model ( and my friends wife, ) decided they wanted to go to a firearms self defense class that an ex FBI agent gives near by.

3 hours later they are so stroked from the instruction they have to get s glock 19. The instructor meets them at his favorite gun shop

They come home with not 1 not 2 but 3 glock 19's ( it must be an ovarian shopping thing like shoes, )

I'm really glad they went ( and listened to a 3rd party) but I m not that crazy about glocks

This, I've noticed, is a thing. Women are seeking out macho, high speed, low drag instructors for pistol carrying. It's snazzy, it's sleek, it's sexy. I'm not a good pistol shot; if and when I want to get better, I'll go to IDPA matches and learn. Also, I'll learn by myself. I have a range membership. It's a good range; it's open 70% of all hours in the day, and I just badge in and am there. I can do whatever drills I want.

Women don't want range time. I had a female friend tell me she isn't interested in, when they come to visit, going to my range and she implied she is beyond that. Well, that's ok, but she really wants to go pay for a macho man's attention and get told nice things and be in videos. Again, it's snazzy, sleek, and sexy, but training is not that. That's instruction, what she has had, but she doesn't PRACTICE. It's ok to buy guns, and buy instruction, but practice, by yourself, is boring, tiring, and time consuming, and it's the only way to get good.

Another reason I am not a good pistol shot is I teach riflery; that's where the power is.

Aside from the female macho bravado, I carry one weapon for CCW self defense - a S&W .38 Airweight Double-Action 5-shot Revolver. The only reason I have owned other pistols is for sport shooting. I've owned a modest number. The best & most accurate pistol I've owned was the 1911 .45 Kimber Super Carry Ultra +

I have no need to go after (pursue) a perpetrator &/or fire at a person from a distance >10'. You will never see me in a standoff. I'll be the first one running to save my pearly white *** from injury or death. That's not to say, if the conditions were conducive, I would not shoot & kill a perpetrator actively engaged in rape or actively threatening the life of another person - I would shoot to kill that person. I would never point a weapon at anyone unless I clearly had motive to shoot & kill that person without hesitation.

I am no longer a member of the military - I find no reason to own a slurry of long-gun weaponry for self-defense or death to the enemy. I am not an advocate of dooms-day Armageddon. I have no underground doomsday bunker. I don't see in my foreseeable future any need to carry mass automatic weapons to protect my Ponderosa from attack. I currently own several long-guns - my long-guns are for hunting wild game.

Koda, Norm, My wife has committed to one hour a week range time. I could have taught her everything the instructor did, but she never would have listened to me. Often [in a marriage] a 3rd party can get more done

No pun intended, She's dead serious about learning to shoot a pistol

Me? I'm old school, I'm a 45 acp guy never leave home with out one

I would note, the instructor said, "Shoot 3 times" I assume he meant, shoot to kill, He also gave some legal advice and good home security information

I'm not a dooms day guy either but the fact remains, the world is changing. The mall [in buckhead] Lennox, I walked to many days of the week as a child now has armed security guards and metal detectors

I'm glad she is looking out for herself

You're right on that, James. It seems like it's all women. A man doesn't know anything unless he is a professional. Girls let me teach the riflery when I'm teaching Appleseed, but women I know don't think I know anything.

Me, I like guns, so I have a little of everything.

Hi everyone.

Today seemed like a good day at work. We did do an awful lot of big wheels all day long. We finished up and were out by 130. When I got home I could hardly move. I didn't plan on doing anything, and sat down and fell asleep. This evening I have tremendous pain walking. If anyone ever asks you if you'd like a bad hip, my advice to you is to tell him no.

Another beautiful day. It's cool out so I don't know why the air conditioner is running. I've heard conflicting reports about rain for the weekend. Cooler for sure and probably next week as well. I'll either be at my desk next week or out sick so maybe if it continues I can get something done.

Norm I didn't want to ask this question on your thread since it isn't a working question. Do you think my laptop would benefit from the Windows 11 update? I haven't yet looked to see if it's even eligible. We are back to the several minutes long log in, the screen locks up and so does scroll. I used to be able to play a Youtube video in one window and, say, post on Classic Oldsmobile, in another, but I can't do that now. I think this thing is just done. Maybe I should start the T-count for "splash down."

Koda that description of yourself makes me picture a 5/4 size Rambo. Perhaps your neighbors are like little dogs. They don't know their size and can't see yours.

As for guns, I tell people I don't have any but I in fact have two. One is my Dad's 357 service revolver and the other is a Walther PPK/S. I don't carry either of them. I really should take a gun course and get comfortable with them. I'm not supposed to have a gun anywhere at work. They have a policy of no guns on the property. While noble, I find it a bit absurd here in the south. Everyone drives a pickup. Everyone hunts. I'd say at least half the vehicles in the parking lot at any given time have firearms in them.

I actually heard from the Impala guy today. He sent me three rather poor pictures of the outside of the car. It is not beautiful. He hasn't fixed the fuel pump yet, probably next week. I still want this thing. It looks like the perfect car to thrash around. I'm not thrilled with the LT1 but my friend says it's better than people say it is. That sounds to me like, I'll come fix it when it's broke.

Okay bedtime. One more. No Saturday this week but he's threatening Saturday and Sunday next week. So I hope they break down a reduced number tomorrow and I can get home and rest up and get something done. Anyway have a good evening everyone.

Mike - Benefit from Windows 11 Update? No

James might be able to use a lightweight boat anchor.

I'll begin the "splash down" for you. T-minus 30 days and counting.....

Yaaawn, still getting used to the new hours at work. Seems like I get home, do a couple chores, eat, and try to watch the tube while half snoozing. Hit the hay at around 9:30, jeesh, maybe I'm showing my age. Signed up for Medicare part "A", should receive my card in a couple of weeks. If I would have hired in a year and a half earlier at my place, my BC/BS would be the supplemental insurance.

Norm, I hired this kid to acid wash my boat and polish. Now he says ( because it was so dirty) he'll finish acid washing but wants another $750 to polish. I said " nuts ". Question is it ok to just leave it washed or fo I need to polish myself. With what?

James - I don't know the answer to this, I am just wondering if you can put the newer ceramic coatings on fiberglass boat hulls, especially if they're painted. If you can, seems like it would make it much easier to clean in the future???

Good morning guys,

Well, you guys already heard my motorcycle battery recently died and then my mower broke. I was wondering what "the 3rd item" would be. Well I let my oldest daughter's husband the firefighter/EMS borrow my 2000 truck for the past couple of days to get to work because one of their cars was in the shop. He texted me after he got to work on Wednesday morning, that the brakes felt soft. Luckily, he got back here safely this morning at 0745 after his 48-hour shift. Checked the brake fluid reservoir and it was empty. Filled it up and pulled it out in the street and had him pump the brakes. I could see it dripping from somewhere near the frame on the driver's side rear wheel housing. My mechanic's shop is only about 4-miles from me so I filled the reservoir full again and drove it up there and he followed me in our other car. It will be next Tuesday before they can even look at it. Maybe I can just get my mechanic to buy me out of it, and then I won't have to pick up any more large pieces of furniture, now there's an idea! I was just relieved the brakes did not totally fail and someone get hurt!

The fall monsoons continue here, the 3rd day in a row of rain and storms that are supposed to continue on and off throughout the day and evening. I was planning on a car show about 55-miles away over in Illinois tomorrow, but I won't take off tomorrow morning if the roads are still wet. Too much work to get over there and then have to spend 2-hours going over the car to get it presentable. I guess I'll just have to see how dry the roads are in the morning. It's supposed to be beautiful tomorrow and Sunday with full sunshine and highs only in the mid-60's.

No big plans for the day. Hope you guys have a great one!

James - Largest variables are was there a good coat of wax prior to acid wash? Acid wash removes some wax/polish making it more vulnerable to algal & moss growth. Static water increases growth of both. But, if the boat is on a lift I think you’d be fine, as is.

Norm Thanks, It looks' white but dull. white, I think I'm going to polish it with buffing compound and then add a coat of wax to make it shine like a new penny

James - I agree with you if you think it looks dull get some wax on it. Of course freshwater boat hulls don't get nearly the abuse as saltwater boat hulls. A much different consortia of algae, moss, barnacles, mussels, etc.

Hi everyone.

I can't tell you how glad I am that this work week is over. Today was another day of big wheels. It was all I could do to flip the last ones. Where's 5/4 Rambo when you need him? Got out too late for the Awful house. Cleaned off the back porch a little when I got home and Tiger and I just got back from taking some stuff over to the house.

Chris I gave up on the rule of 3's. I find things go wrong evenly spaced. I never get a break. If something doesn't break after awhile I get paranoid. Did you see what was leaking on the truck? Line, cylinder or caliper? Hope it's an easy fix.

Jamesbo didn't the kid see how dirty the boat was when he quoted you the job? Gonna call him next time?

Norm I must really be done if you don't have any suggestions for this (light) boat anchor. I guess I should start watching the sale papers. By the way, I have all of my old computers that have been replaced over the years. No need for them to be sitting around, how should I dispose of them? I'm not sure there's anything incriminating on them but I wouldn't want some savvy tech pirate to find it and gleen some account number out of the memory. I should try to fire them up one last time and read 20 year old emails. The oldest one is Pentium 2. It was dial up and slow as can be, but it was the most reliable out of any that I've had. I used that guy for years.

So Koda I had to laugh when I went over to my other house today. I hadn't mowed in weeks, and the yard was long but not obnoxious. Maybe 8-10 inches, but uniform not scraggly. Today the place was mowed. And not just the front part that I mow, the whole place. Front sides, back, other side of the driveway. I thought for a minute, trying to figure out if I'd pissed anyone off lately and this was their retribution. Heck, I'd do it again. The guy across the street, we figure his wife is the one who calls Code Enforcement all the time, he cuts his lawn I think twice a day. I'm sure it wasn't him. Funny how we were just talking about that. I gotta figure out who did it.

Okay a little TV and then lights out. Heard we might get rain tomorrow, who knows. Got plenty to do inside or outside so I'm covered. Hope everyone has a good evening.

Mike - I didn't crawl up under it to see exactly where the leak was, but standing back and looking at the side of the truck it looked like it was leaking from up on the frame rail, in front of the rear tire, so I'm assuming it's a line, and can't be a cylinder or caliper. I didn't want to put myself through the aggravation so I took it straight to the shop.

Edit: Whoah, big pic.

The 4000 arrived in the mail Powered up fine, all ***** move well. Does not have the optional decoder, but I can acquire one.

Mike, that's funny on the timing of the lawn.

Chris, I think you're right, I would guess junction to soft line?

Mike - You stated you have a couple of guns. I have a container in the man-cave which collects dead/unwanted/unusable electronic devices. Every several years I take them into the woods for target practice. I promise you there will be no data remaining on anything after several rounds. That Pentium CPU should make a nice target. Ready on the firing line...

John - Very nice Model 4000 Marantz. Hey, don't apologize to me for a large picture. Who wants to stare at a small picture you can barely see. Make them large (except for Mike, for some reason Mike doesn't like large pictures). And, I have a 42" monitor - so it's really large and very detailed.

Chris - Peculiar the brakes nearly went out - a 2000 model year truck isn't what I'd consider that old by truck standards for metal brake lines to wear out - if that's the issue. Thankfully the emergency brake wasn't called upon.

Norm - Like I have mentioned many times, I am not much of a mechanic. I don't think the brakes were close to totally failing, unless I'm off-base on how a dual master cylinder system works. Isn't it true there is redundancy in a dual cylinder system such that if one line or leakage at a one wheel occurs, the lines to the other wheels/brakes will continue to operate at least for a while?

Chris, Dual reservoir systems typically isolate front to back. If you had a leak near a rear wheel, you would experience loss of fluid with each activation, typically knocking out that wheel's braking and reducing the other one back there, while the fronts would remain fine. This would continue until you leaked all the fluid in the back of the system and you would have no rear brakes then, and still have fronts. At that point, your brake light, seeing a pressure imbalance, should illuminate on the dash. Throughout all this, front braking would ideally remain undiminished. Master cylinder failure, which seems to be what _I_ get, takes it ALL out, then you are hanging out with downshifting and parking brake to stop.

The Marantz 4000 is designed for a tape loop in the front receiver. I put in in a source on this program selector I have, and I exhumed my college days receiver, and some ancient Boston bookshelf speakers, to stand in for the back channels. After some learning, 95% of the things I tested in the 4000 work great, with a little static in the balance sliders that seemed to leave after I worked them some. 4 speaker mono is mono, double stereo is cool, matrix only plays the front since it wasn't a matrix 4 channel recording, SQ needs the module, and Vari-Matrix is some spooky stuff. If you put the Dimension dial full left, you get a SUM signal (L+R) (which is a derived mono because it is adding the data in the left and right channels together), so it's like 3 channel stereo. (Left, Right, and Center). However, full right is a Difference signal (L-R) and that is only what is different between the left and right (as in, what's in stereo). So I have the thing in Vari-Matrix, dial most of the way into the difference side, and I have on Cosmo's Factory on "Who'll Stop the Rain?" The final refrain to each chorus, with the title of the song, is panned stereo, so this difference thing picked it up and made it sound like they were echoing off a church's stones. Summarily, it does cool stuff to portions of the song that is really in stereo.

I didn't test everything in the unit, but it's great for now.

John - What you described above matches perfectly with what my son-in-law and I observed happening with my truck. First he noticed a squishy brake pedal, then after a period of time the brake light came on, then discovered leak was near a rear wheel, and front brakes still operational.

Well Chris, when you lived in Michigan, I'm sure you or a friend had brake line problems. Mi uses so much salt! It all depends on where you live in this great country as far as rust! I think my 06 F250 may have blew the same line as yours. It was behind the big plastic gas tank. So to fix properly tank should have came out. Line was about a 6 ft long piece. I just took it loose from where it joined the further forward line, and took it loose from the tee on the rear end- reached up as far as I could on rusted out line and cut off. Then bought a 6 ft piece of brake line and stuffed up between tank and frame, connected it up and zip stripped it where I could to other lines or whatever, bled brakes and done! Not what you would do as a licensed shop, but good enough for my rusty beater plow truck...
-- Norm, I had to chuckle when you mentioned that a 2000 truck doesn't seem old enough for that type of problem. Around here brake lines go out all the time. Most kids knew how to replace rusted lines by the time they were 18. Kids had the older cars and if over 5 years old or so you had better be checking out your brake lines. Especially on 66? and older cars with single master cylinders- one rusted out line anywhere and NO brakes!!

Greg - I should have brought my truck to you, sounds like a whole helluva lot cheaper fix than what I'm gonna get away with. For what little I use my truck anymore, your fix sounds like the best deal.
