When I was a teenager my hair was to the middle of my back. I (or a girlfriend) would tie it off in back. Oh my those were the days.

 

I don't mind cold weather, but when the wind is a blistering 30mph it plain sucks.

 

Mine was never that long, but was down to a little past my shoulders in the mid-70's. I started having it cut a little shorter my Senior year in HS (Fall '76).


Sophomore year of HS, Fall of '74, I'm lower left, #22. That's my Dad in the upper left, JV Football Coach, even his hair was long.


Senior year in HS, Fall '76, I'm still #22. My hair was much shorter.

My replacement (newly purchased) storm door mortised lock set arrived. I forgot how nice it was when brand new. Like many lock sets I suspect it was approaching end-of-life, perhaps. I won't be fighting the wind & cold just to install it, today.

 

Glad it got there Norm. Sure don't blame you for not wanting to jump into it today, damn cold out there. Starting the warming trend later today here. It's supposed to be back up close to 75° here on Friday and close to 80° Saturday.

Just got back a short time ago from my appointment with the Orthopedic Surgeon for my hip pain. They took multiple x-rays. Surgeon evaluated them and told me my arthritis is a grade 3 out of 4, with 4 being the worst. He said they usually don't recommend a total hip replacement until grade 4. However, for whatever reason, I have large growths of a couple of bone spurs on each side of the hip sockets. He said the very sharp pains I feel on occasion are caused by connective tissue trying to move past these bone spurs. If/when I were to get the hip replacements they would also shave down the bone spurs. As a 1st step he recommended Cortisone injections for both hips to see how much relief it gives me, so that's what I did. He said that hips, because of the nature of their construction, don't usually respond well to various PT regimens, but we could re-visit that down the road if I wanted. He also said they could go ahead with total hip replacements now if I couldn't get an adequate amount of relief from Cortizone injections. Getting old ain't for sissies, for sure! 😩 I'm really hoping the injections work for a considerable while. He said I could get them every 3-months.

 

Chris - Hate to say it but doesn't weight lifting contribute to formation of hip bone spurs?

 

Yes, I would imagine it would, and possibly did. However, I haven't did any weight lifting with my legs since undergrad during off season weight training for football. Since my early 20's all my weight training has been limited to upper body work. My leg training was limited to either running or work on a variety of cardio machines, which is what I'm still doing. I use this Bowflex Max trainer now that is supposed combine both the motions of a glider and a stair climber in one motion. It's really kind of baffling how I can still use this machine with minimal hip pain, but it's true.

 

Ah, OK. For some reason I thought you were still dead lifting.

 

Nope, but doing Squats with 385 lbs on my neck and spine back then certainly destroyed the discs in both, and probably was a big contributer to the problems I now have with my hips. A painful fate I have to live with now, but honestly looking back, I wouldn't do it any differently, those days are some of my most cherished memories!

Thanks Greg, I really appreciate it! No worries, and no regrets here though, it is what it is and if the pain gets too intolerable they'll do the surgeries, all I have to do is give them the go ahead. I have too many blessings in my life to whine or bitch about a little pain! 👍

Chris, Good luck. My grandfather had so much hip muscle failure[back in the day] he had to have his shoe thickened to walk . He passed away from kidney failure do to pain meds

Sorry to hear about your hip arthritis Chris , my wife have replaced one hip and there was h#ll of pain before that .
Very hard to sleep because of all pain. But before replacement she got several Cortisone injections who helped a lot
for some month. For best effect they used xray while they injected to have the Cortisone to the best spot in the hip.
But they only give Cortisone a couple of times because it could effect other things in the body. But after the hip
replacement all pain is gone.

Yes , getting old ain't for sissies, for sure! Was at the dentist yesterday and removed tooth rots but luckaly they
have a very good anesthesia ( ? ) so i don´t feel anything

 

Good morning everyone.

Things are smoother at work and I'm getting my paperwork like I'm supposed to. Nothing is broke, and with the help of the wall guy for the guy behind me, I have over 20 wheels at only two hours in.

Chris those are nice pictures. We have too much city light around me to be able to see stuff like that.

Last night I went to Mom's and let Tiger out. He ran down the steps to go bark at a duck, and it looked like he was running on three legs. He got to the lake and was limping something fierce. I went down to see if there was anything obvious, nope. He limped back but couldn't get up the steps. He'd growl when I tried to help him. I said growl all you want if you can't get up the steps you need help. He couldn't get in the car so I helped. He couldn't get up the steps at home so I helped. He wanted to go out around 1130 so we went out front. Only three steps out front. He stood around and didn't do anything so I said the heck with you I'm going back to bed. We went out in the back yard at 3 and he can go down steps fine, but it took about 10 minutes to get back up. I know Mom's plan is to just not let him out all day. That's a long time, 13 hours or so. I might try to leave a little early and if he isn't any better I'll take him to the vet. That must be it, Tiger thinks I have too much money. I hate when I can't fix what's wrong with him.

Grilled steak today at work. Not sure what the occasion is but whenever we do this it's pretty good.

Jim - Sure sounds like your grandfather had a horrible time of it. I'm not on any pain mess anymore right now. Completely stopped the Ibuprofen on doctor's orders because of what it was doing to my stomach, and the Tylenol really doesn't seem to help much, so why take it right..

Glenn - Thanks for sharing your wife's experiences with her hip issues and replacement. I've talked to many other people now who have also had it done and said it was the best decision they ever made. I won't hesitate to have it done if the pain just gets to be too unbearable.

So sorry to hear about Tiger. Like Norm, I'm guessing Hip Dysplasia, but ya never know. Maggie has hip issues and comes up gimpy every now and then, and needs help getting up the stairs or getting up on the couch for a couple of days, but so far she's always gotten better. At least she will let me help her. No easy task helping her though with my own hip issues. I hope he gets better soon!

Beautiful Fall morning with sunny skies and headed towards a high of about 65°. Temps will continue to rise thru Saturday with highs in the mid-70's on Friday and Saturday.

Some of you guys may find this interesting, I know I really appreciated this approach when I went to see the Orthopedic Surgeon yesterday. The examining room I was in had a computer and a large monitor on the wall. My doctor pulled up 3 x-ray images on the monitor, on the left was an image of a healthy hip joint, in the middle was my hip image (grade 3 arthritis), and on the right was a hip with advanced arthritis (grade 4). He was able to easily point out to me how the cartilage between the head of my femur and the pelvis socket had deteriorated compared to the image of the healthy joint example. He was also easily able to point out how the advanced arthritis example (grade 4) showed essentially no cartilage left in spots between the head of the femur and the pelvis socket. In the case of my image he was also easily able to point out the bone spurs I had developed, how large they were, and how they would be removed if I had surgery. All of this was truly a case of a picture/s being worth a thousand words!

I don't think it's hip dysplasia. He was fine when I walked in the house and then a minute later he leapt off the steps and ran towards the lake. I think he may have landed wrong and sprained/strained something. I talked to Mom this morning and she said he went up and down the stairs to the back yard by himself.

Chris there's a guy in the shop that's having hip surgery on Monday. I don't know what the problem is but he's been in a lot of pain for a long time. I said why are you waiting. He went to the doctor finally, said yes I want this done, and the doctor said, okay in 5 days. Whoa. His head is spinning I said don't cancel just do it! He's excited about being off for two months.

With me there was arthritis in the socket which was pushing the ball outward. When I had Xrays done at the chiro she said I had spurs on my spine so big they needed their own names. Funny I can't feel them. All the other Xrays I've had done at the ortho no one has ever said anything about them.

Steak was good. Now no one is working. But no one is saying anything so I guess it's okay. I'm at 45 wheels right now anyway. I might walk down to the roll up door and call Mom again.

 

That's a good sign and great news Mike! Hopefully he just tweaked something this morning and he's already getting over it? 🤞

A few weeks ago we had an enormous amount of wheels stacked up in the back. The overtime carrot was hung out, and the foreman said if we cleared them all up we'd have steak for lunch one day. Apparently the foreman figured out how much of the overtime money he could keep if he didn't pay it out, so overtime went away. The wheels cleared themselves up. But we held him to the steak so that was today. Not a bad spread, baked potatoes, green beans of which I had none, and cupcakes. And drinks which was pop they went out to the hangar and took off an airplane.

Going over to Mom's in a minute. I usually wait until 5 or so but I want to see how Tiger is. Nice out, maybe 65, sunny. I'd like to do something outside, maybe tomorrow.

 

Now that I can get on board with anytime! 😃

 

I bought six (6) Hass avocados two days ago @ 0.79/each - that's stupid cheap!!

 

Mike - Glad to see you figured out who sponsored the steak. Wait until tomorrow to do something outside - better weather & you need to check on Tiger today.

 

That is cheap! I've had 3 sitting on the counter for a few days now, I hope they're not overripe? We're having BBQ Pork Steaks and Tater Tots for dinner but an Avocado sounds good as another side, plus I don't want them to go bad if they haven't already.

 

I ripen avocados in the refrigerator where they never over-ripen.

Interesting tidbit regarding avocados. They're one of a very, very select fruit which does not ripen on the vine, so to speak - I know, they grow on trees. The point is an avocado fruit matures on the tree, but it will not ripen on the tree. An avocado must by picked to begin to ripen. One of the reasons avocados ship so well, and experience infrequent bruising is because they are shipped refrigerated when they are hard as a rock. Refrigeration hastens the ripening process; yet, avocados will continue to ripen while refrigerated because as soon as they are picked, they begin to ripen - not before.
