Enough is ENOUGH !!!!
I wanted to find a previous post I made so I went to my user profile to click the "statistics" tab and a friggen Volkswagon ad is embedded in that tab so I can't open it. I can't close it to get rid of it and there's no way to open the tab.
I know this general subject has been posted again and again
How about the adminstrators do something to stop this crap before we all dump this site!!!!!!!!

Mike, I feel your pain.
I used to get those stupid pop ups till I installed Adblocker Plus. Nothing anymore. Still it's annoying to lots who don't know about that.
Just a suggestion: the top dog on the IT for this site is Paul (Omicron). Maybe give him a shout and vent your concerns to him on behalf of others who have the same issue. ref: the VW popup thread.

I go on Classic Olds at home with my work laptop, work with my desktop, and with my iPhone. The ads have gotten so bad on the iphone it's difficult to view anything EXCEPT ads.

The problem is every word that you see highlighted in a thread is an active link to an ad. I can deal with that. My guess is that tag words within threads are are sold to be linked to ads.
When a word is used for a link like "statistics" the ad apparently overrides the classic olds link and renders the tab inoperable. That sucks. For example, what happens when the "Private" in "Private Messages" starts taking you to an ad? Pretty soon the whole website becomes inoperable.
BTW when I first posted this post apparently "website" was a tag word to an ad too now it's not, someone figure out how this works so it can be stopped

Sometimes it's just easier to try something different. Use firefox browser latest version and no issues for me even on the stats tab. Yes there are still ads but only at the top and bottom which to me is fair enough given the site is free.

I found that if I hover to the right of the word "statistics" but I'm still over the tab I can get it to open. What a PIA.
edit:
I don't usually use it but I'm on in Firefox now and it's better.

Chrome is also pretty decent. You mean your work IT section hasn't got some sort of advertising blocker on their machines? I remember before retirement our computer network was so secure against stuff like this, I swear I didn't even know there was advertising on this site.

I don't know if it will help or not but I sent messages today to several people way over my head about how we all feel about this crap. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a buck to pay for space (although I feel its a waste of every penny an advertiser spends) but when an ad takes over a screen because you glide over it that is taking it way too far.

I use IE and I do not get any ads other than at the top and bottom of the thread. Nor do I get any pop ups. I use chrome on my android and have no problems either. I do not allow pop ups (see Tools-Security). The hyperlinks for common search words I think is the accelerator add-on that can be disabled.

Any web browers you used you should have adblocker plus, ghostery and do not track. These are all extensions(Chrome) or addon(firefox), stay away from explorer and safari.
you can get firefox for moblie phones and PC and MACs.
I have never seen a add on this site.
I have found that these site track this page
Double Click
Viglink
internet brand
exelate
facebook Connect
Reddit
twitter button
But most web pages have these tracking what you search for That is the reason for all the addon/extensions. i have to say this website has alot less then most sites it can be worest

I agree that "enough is enough!" This is a royal pain!
It prevents one from enjoying the forum, and certainly makes it difficult to use. Some advertising is indeed acceptable and economically necessary, but user should not have to install software to be able to read the messages here without these unsolicited intrusions!
