clunking underneath when car in motion
clunking underneath when car in motion
my 72 CS ragtop started clunking pretty notably underneath when in motion but currently only when I have a passenger in the right front seat - i.e. when I'm driving alone, it doesn't occur. I replaced the transmission mount last night thinking it might have been bad, but it looked great. Entire suspension rebuilt about 6 years ago, mostly all Moog rubber and associated parts. About 15k miles on all since then. Body bushings were replaced probably back in the 90's by a prior owner and the most visible ones looked great at last look. But I will be checking them again.
Feels like the clunking is coming from under the right front or middle area floor towards hump but I suppose it's possibly coming from somewhere else and carrying forth into that area - driveshaft is new aluminum assembly so lighter in weight than the steel tube unit it replaced about a month ago. Eyeballed the motor mounts and they look ok from what I can see - no visibly obvious separation or developing tear issues and the motor only rocks minimally at most to the right on rev up test.
I don't appear to be missing any control arm stops and all components appearing tight with no visible play that I can tell yet.
Any 'why didn't I think of that' ideas on what to check next?

Exhaust pipe that has some movement to it, perhaps? That's what happened to me with my '69 4-4-2. It had been put together solely with clamps. I had an exhaust man I know look at it and he went through everything, refitting as appropriate and tac-welding all the joints. It made a big difference and....no clunking!
