72 sport mirror hold down screw

Looking to see if anybody can tell me the specific type and size of screw that is used to hold the sport mirror to the bracket seen here.

It's a bevel head Philips screw but I don't recall the screw diameter and pitch.

Yes, as mentioned, it's a oval pan type screw and the original was chrome plated. Philips head. The originals are unique in that the first 1/8" or so of the screw shaft is smooth and undersized (smaller OD) compared to the threaded part. That made it easier to get it in the hole on the far side of the bracket since the installer couldn't actually see the bracket and screw tip when installing.

I'll try to dig one up and measure it. You could use a regular stainless oval pan head philips there and just polish it up to look like chrome instead of paying a lot for a repro.

The only "issue" may be if the screw head is undersized compared to a standard screw you'd buy locally.

Any information of the screw part number shown in the 72 assembly manual? If so try looking it up on AMK Products web site. They do have a glossary of part numbers and descriptions. Most fasteners are somewhat generic.

Hello Brian, I am doing the same installation as you but on my '70 Cutlass.

I have this same sport mirrors with the bracket as shown in your photo.

Can you tell me what you used inside the door skin to mount the mirror bracket? From what I can tell it looks like this mirror is for a 71/72 but a pair of them came along with the car in a box of parts so I am going to use them.

Any advice on retrofitting these sport mirrors on my cutalss that originally came with a singe chrome mirror is appreciated.

thanks,

Pat

It just bolts right on the driver side.

You'll need to drill the holes and fabricate a plate on the passenger side. You can make a template of the driver door and just flip it around to use it on the passenger. I just used a piece of 16 ga steel as a reinforcement plate.

thank you for the info.

Will I need one for both sides or only the passenger side?

I made a backing plate out of a piece of 1/8" or so sheet aluminum. Drilled and tapped holes for the mounting screws, and one hole for a rivet to hold the plate in place while the mirror was mounted.

Thanks......this is exactly what I was thinking about doing. Those backing plates are not cheap.

Driver side should already be reinforced for the mirror that was on there.
