Well after 3 months I finally got my new door panels from Legendary and while I'm installing the fronts I'm going to be installing a pair of sport mirrors I got a while ago (thanks Bill!). My car currently has a drivers-side chrome mirror.

My question is I believe I need some internal reinforcement for the sport mirrors since I'm introducing these to a car that never had them. I can fabricate something but it would be good to see what is normally used and I haven't got a clue. It looks like OPGI sells a pair of reinforcements but that's the only reference I've seen, but there is no picture provided.

Has anyone done this that can give me some tips?

I used a piece of 1/8" thick flat aluminum plate long enough to span the two attaching screws. I pre-drilled holes for the screws then held it in place inside the door while I attached the mirror base.

 

Thanks - I also saw this pic of a bracket offered by inline tubing. I have some stock that I'll use to fabricate a bracket like you did.

 

Pretty sure those were only used on '73 & up cars? Never seen one on the '70-'72 cars.

 

Maybe you've never seen it since it's used for the 70 - 71 -72 cars that retrofit the sport mirrors? I think I'll put a bracket on the inside anyways - can't hurt

 

Dalilama, you are right the picture you posted that part is required for sport mirrors like you said for reinforcement to keep the mirror from moving. Am doing the same thing to my 72 cs. I haven't put the passenger side mirror on yet because I do not have that piece. I originally had the chrome mirror on my driver side door too. If you have your driver side door panel off look up towards where the mirror go and you will see that piece.
