adjusting my 68 cutlass hood
adjusting my 68 cutlass hood
adjusting the hinges to the fender im guessing is were im needing it done. the hood is rased up in the back by the wind sheld (on both sides). do i slide the hinges down or up to fix this? i have them all the way down and it stays the same unless i push the hood down in the back. thanks
First they may need a bit lubrication, then I would check the following. Are all your gaps set, so that the hood is foward and lined up in front with the fenders? Is there any thing in the way in the back like the rubber guides on the fenders, or the rain weather strip that runs across windsheild valance? If all those are ok, then I would look at the hinges for worn rivots or possibly the hinge springs.
Make sure you put the spacer back in at the rear connection point to the hood (Assembly Manual page 11-187)
Did you mark the hinge location before taking everything apart? It sounds like the rear of the hinge is too high

open the hood
loosen the 2 back bolts
have someone push up on the hood.
tighten the two bolts back down
carefully lower the hood and check for alignment. You might have to repeat this process a few times to get it just right. GM fit from the factory wasn't always perfect either. There could be a height difference of 1/8" that was within factory specs.
Shimming the fenders will also raise the hood by the same amount as the shim, so shimming isn't always the answer.
Play with it and see how it works out.
I love it when a plan comes together.
In the future remember that to adjust those type hoods you raise the front of the hinge to lower the hood and lower the hinge in the front to raise the hood.
People make the mistake of lowering the hinge in front to get it down in the back and when they close it and the hood is higher than before they go nutso.
It may sound bass-ackwards but that's the way it is.
