Double throttle return spring?

Came across a YouTube short video about carburetors, and the guy mentioned using a double return spring in case one fails. Is this necessary? Is this one of those overthinking things? My 61 Olds 98 has but a single return spring. Looks to be in good shape because I replaced it years ago. The original didn’t have that “springiness” to it anymore.

Anyway, just thinking safety precautions here. Thoughts?

Dual springs are OK as long as they are “soft”’ enough so you can easily operate the throttle. Too stiff and it can make the throttle hard to operate.

I know nothing about your era carb, but mine has a built-in return spring on the throttle shaft, so the single external spring makes it a dual spring configuration.

Don't believe everything you see on YouTube. If it bothers you, replace the spring every10-20 years or so.

I believe it's an NHRA rule. I wouldn't sweat it. There are return springs on the throttle shaft.

YUP. you need two springs.
It isn't a bad Idea, less likely to have the throttle hang open with 2.

Dual springs have been a federal requirement since the early 1970s. Yes, the factory ones are quite soft individually.

Well, I'll be dipped in sugar. Thank you Joe P and Fleming. I learned something new.

Years ago on my '68 Charger the throttle spring snapped while I was on a highway road trip - instantly propelling me from 50+mph to 80+ before I was able to get the car into neutral and pull the gas pedal up from the floor, all while positioning the car over towards the shoulder for an eventual stop.

Luckily it snapped in a place where it left me enough to stretch a remaining section of it back in place so that I could get off the highway and find a local auto parts store for a replacement

At the time I'd thought I had an spare spring in the glove box but of course, nope....

So yeah, dual springs not a bad thing....

Dual springs on my Edelbrock 1406, no internal spring so two external springs for safety sake.

Did the dual springs appear at the same time throttle linkage was replaced with cable in '68?

Adding a spring to a single spring set-up is similar to changing from a single to dual reservoir MC in that, it isn't a problem until...

Yes, do it.

I have two on mine. One facing forward and one facing backwards. That being said the Feds have yet to show up at my door to check.

So, all in all, maybe not a bad idea? A couple pics of the setup on my Rochester 4GC carb with the spring.
