Easy ? RE: Front Seal

Hi all, I'm new to Olds Big Blocks, and have a timing cover to balancer seal to replace. Is it necessary to remove the timing cover to do this job, or can I just remove the balancer to get to it?

Thanks,
Ken

That seal is pressed in, I doubt you will be able to remove it without removing the cover, or install the new one for that matter. That is something the Chevy guys always rib me about (only thing??) the cover isn't two piece like theirs so that job neccesitates the full removal of the cover, and the water pump. But you are already halfway there by the time you get the balancer off anyways so....

Really? That's too bad... I was told that it could be done without removing the cover. I haven't had alot of experience with the bottom ends of engines. So there's no way for me to get that seal out and the new one in without a press?

Thanks.

Well, you might be able to pry the old one out from the font side and the hammer a new one in. Nothing is impossible, I have just never done it that way. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.
