#400269 Water Pump Used for Early Prod. W-30?
#400269 Water Pump Used for Early Prod. W-30?
Our car, (NOT the one pictured below), has what until now, we assumed was the original water pump for the car, (low mileage, Dec. '69 build date, car that we have owned since '83) The water pump is a #400269, not the #404584 that I understand is what would be on most, if not all no A/C '70 W-30's. Is their anyone with an early production, specifically a Dec. '69, no a/c car, that can give us any input on what they have on their car.
Thanks, Dave

I know of a '70 W30 drivetrain that was supposed to be pulled from a wrecked car in TX as early as 71 or 72. I had the motor here to do some cleanup work on it and it had the 269 water pump on it as well. I think they used up what they had and then switched to the other casting number(s).
I'm fairly sure the 269 pump was used on an AC car or one with HD Cooling as it has the large inlet like the 404847 pumps which you see on a lot of '70 cars (with AC or HD Cooling).
I'll try to find some date code info on different components on the motor tomorrow as it had the original carb, etc as well.

Interesting discussion, I have a 4th week of Dec 69 W30 which I have owned since 1978. Shortly after I bought it the water pump went and I exchanged the original for a rebuilt.
What is the date code on the pump?
What is the date code on the pump?
It's hard to make out exactly, but it looks like 262, or 1262.

They only used 3 numbers for certain items under the hood to indicate the Julian date of the year. The year is omitted so that could be the 244th day of any year. I generally thought that the 400269 water pumps were used in the '68 and '69 model year Oldsmobiles (A-bodies with heavy duty cooling or air conditioning?) which would mean the year produced on those pumps would be the 2nd half of 1967, all of 1968 and perhaps the first 7-8 months of 1969? That's just a guess on my part. In any case for these water pumps, though, there is no year indicated.

I know this is an old thread, been busy with other things and have just got back to this water pump deal.
I'd like to get input from any owners of early build date 1970 W-30 cars (first week of Dec. 69 and prior), what water pump was on your car, and how certain are you that it is original to the car.
