X water pump
X water pump
I figure this is an aftermarket pump but thought i would ask here first. I never seen an aftermarket with an X but maybe it is. Anyone ever see one like this one? I have an original 70 X water pump but this is not the same. If it is origibnal it must be another year?

i can see it in the thumbnails. looks kinda stock, although the 70 w30 pump i had was different. the casting numbers were going vertically on the bottom hose flange.
Use it on your car!! better than nothing. cool find.

I have the original for my car and it has the numbers on the inlet like yours. Mine has so much pitting it is hard to see the original casting numbers. So you guys think this is an OEM pump
now that im staring at it more....maybe not.......i think it is possible, or a damn good knockoff. look at the bottom left bolt hole. see how it is squared, but has a raised u shaped flange that looks like a stock valve guide port boss? The aftermarket castings are more of a circle instead of that tear drop shape. I'm sure when the aftermarket suppliers made their castings, they probably didnt give a hoot about maintaining that exact factory shaping. ill get u some pictures.
here are 3 aftermarket pumps. blue one is autozone/oriileys/advance etc. replacement
gold one is ac delco replacement from rockauto
They are way bigger and flatter, and more circular like a washer

Here's the kicker though. The only aftermarket pumps i have seen that are similar to stock have a letter m surrounded by a diamond stamped into them.
Here's a pic. This last orange pump resembles the one that you have there, BUT if you notice, the bolt hole diameter is noticeably bigger than stock stock size hole. The boss is close, but the big hole is a dead giveaway. Also note the "hump" that protrudes into the inlet. Stock pumps are flat there from my experience.

I can't tell what the hole diameter is on your x pump from the pics. Find some suitable dowels to compare the holes and report back. If it's bigger than your stock pump, I'm inclined to say it's a fake.
Also my orange pump has the same font stampings on it, with a 4 number ID code, and 1 bigger number stamped on the lower hose boss.
I personally think ours are at least cousins..... if not brother and sister. and most likely aftermarket at some point.

I believe factory castings will have the factory 6-digit number. Be aware that the large identifier on the RH outlet boss, like the "X" or "4" or "O" or whatnot, is NOT a firm identifier- much like W-LH and W-RH exhaust manifOLDS, there were some liberties taken with the main identifier. And, I am told that there are "X" water pumps with no factory 6-digit number, which DO NOT have the proper length and proper inlet nipple diameter for a real 1970 HDC "X" pump.
I am ready to start making replica water pumps with correct casting ID's.
How about the AL pump, but bearing your favorite casting ID large character and 6-digit PN? Hell, "ER-____" experimental number, or match your birthdate or car's VIN last 6!
