455 Oil Filter Adapter Options
A picture is worth a thousand words, yes? I ran into a problem tonight when installing headers. The oil filter adapter on this 455 is angled such that a filter (I'm trying to use Wix 51258) cannot be screwed on without hitting one of the primary tubes.
It looks like I need an adapter that points straight down or possibly perpendicular to the block. What other compatible filter adapter designs did Oldsmobile make?

Since you're running headers you apparnelty aren't too concerned with keeping the car completely original. Would an oil filter relocation kit work?

The space between your oil filter housing and the header is negligible. I don't even know if you could get a shorter filter in there. Hopefully others have ideas too.

Is that from a Toronado? It seems to face forward too much. It should face straight down like the one in my pic. Although the one pictured is a oil cooler model the stock one would be shorter and still face down.

This block came from a pile of V8's in a junkyard, so I'm not sure what vehicle it was originally in. I seem to remember that I dated the block as an 1975. It did not have a Toronado pan with the indentation for the axle and also came with this angled oil filter adapter.

Correct. And the one from Rocket Racing will have the same position as the one you should be using, vertical. The only difference in the RR one is that it has slightly larger passages and doesn't have the relief valve.

Do what Joe said and your problem is solved and the part is cheap.Ask around with a post in parts wanted forum and i bet someone has one.

New vertical style filter adapter from RetroRanger installed and painted. The headers do not contact the oil filter anywhere. Excellent.
