Restoration on a 66 98 conv

I have removed all the chrome, top, and have the radiator and front fenders and front out of my 66 98 convertible. I want to pull the engine and trans out together. Is that the best way to remove them, or should I do it separately?

The engine is blue with 389244D cast on it. There is no engine serial # on it as there is on my other 66 98 convertible. The rear axle is stamped QM,upside down, on both my cars.

Obviously the engine has been changed, but how can I tell if it is a later 425 or 455. Should I paint the engine red?

Any input will be appreciated.

The engines are a red orange not true red. A D block is a 425. Engines and trans can come out together but you need more room to work and make sure trans is drained or stopper put in tailshaft.

I ASSume you mean that there is no engine number stamped into the pad on the front of the passenger side head.

Have you checked the pad on the back of the driver's side head?

Thanks Eric,

Donkey found the # on the driver side rear, N788345, does the number give any indication of date of manufacture?

N 788,345 -

Means a 1966 10.25:1 425 with 4bbl carb, rated at 365HP / 470 ft/pounds, the 288,344th 425 produced that year.

Engine and tranny are at the shops. Starting body work for paint. Doors, hood, trunk lid cowl and fenders are removed. The car would look great in torch red with a black top, but provincial white is the original color with a white top. The interior is black.
Any advice on the color, vs value and curb appeal etc...

Color on these cars doesn't seem to have much effect on the value as long as it is appealing. With the red, I, personally, would like to see the top white. If you opt for the white, I would go with a black top. If you look at the original color chart for these cars, you might find something else you would like. There were a couple of colors that are nice and are seldom seen. I'm in Florida at this time so can't give you any specific info until I get back home to my books.

Here is an update on the restoration. See attached photos.

I am having trouble finding new body mounts.

Anyone know an answer to a substitute mount for this 66 98 conv?

The car is turning out to be very solid. The engine is being completely rebuilt and repainted. Trans has all new seals replaced.

The underside is a speckled grey. should it be redone or left original?

The radiator core support kits are available from Fusick (RC662K, $40.00). I went by measurement and found suitable rubber grommets from Steele. It's been a while (2003) so I don't remember exactly how they were listed. There catalog shows diameter, thickness and hole size. How are your steel cones inside the mounts? I had some that were badly deteriorated and was lucky to find a couple on a partial car in the wrecking yard. They are impossible to find anywhere else since nobody seems to think about saving them when parting out a car. You are lucky that the frame holes are in such good shape. I had to do a bit of repair work on mine. Paint the underbody with semi-flat black paint and the outerbody color overspray will take care of the rest.

Thanks for the input Bruce

The steel cones are in great shape and the frame still has shiny black paint under the mounts.

I already have new radiator supports from Fusick.

The parking brake restraint thru the body was a problem and was damaged.

The speedometer cable pulled out and needs to be replaced

Ready to install the engine.

The engine is rebuilt and ready to go into the painted chassis. In the olds manual it shows a special washer on the left side motor mount stud. Where is this part available? This part was not there at disassembly.
It is shown as part # 389069.
I have new motor mounts from Fusick, but nuts and washers are not part of the assembly.

Also the speedo cable attaches to the front left wheel and needs to be replaced. The cable itself is intact, but the rubber shield covering is in pieces, and changes to a molded plastic at a couple of places.

Any input is appreciated.

I am familiar with that washer however I dont know its purpose and really see no purpose for it. If you can live without it being there all will be well. Just use a standard washer.
