oil priming problems

I've put a 1970 455 back together after some minor crank shaft work and new bearings. I hook up the drill to the oil pump shaft and spin it CCW for 3-4 minutes. Oil preassure comes up to 65 right away. I have oil coming out of about half the lifters. I pulled all of the pushrods and flushed them in the parts washer. Tried again with same results. I rotated the crank several times and tried again. Got oil out of a couple more but there are about 6 really stuborn ones. Any suggestions?

It takes a long while 15 minutes or more.

I'll try again and keep going until I get the desired results. Any suggestions on a drill support so I can turn it on and walk away.....hmmmm

I've never tried a support. Rotating the engine a 1/4 turn helps.

I've rotated it several times- 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn, 360+ without any noticible change.

When i primed my engine with a batterydrill, it tooks time that the oil come up, in the beginning it comes out only few places, then i begin to turn the crank little by little when priming between, to the end it comes out of all lifters. Took some time but it worked.

What oil u use?

I'm using a 1/2" drill motor- plug into the oulet type. I set it up to run hands free and turned it on for 20 minutes. There was minor improvement but not much.

I'm not a big fan of "start it up and let it do it's thing". I've had excelent success in the past using this priming method. This is the first time I've had this kind of difficulty.

I'm glad I continued to troubleshoot the issue. The root of the problem is crudded up lifters. The hydraulic plunger was froze in many of them. Replaced the cam, lifters and valve springs. The oil is pumping like crazy. I can now have confidence in this motor knowing that all is well.

Glad you found your issue. We assume lifters in good shape.
