help! No oil on Rocker Arms using priming tool on 394

Hello All,

Need some help, I am in the process of priming on my 394 engine (1964).

The engine was running in perfect condition before i removed it from the car, the only things i have done are to replace timing chain, front cover gasket, water pump and gasket, oil pan gasket, and oil pump and pickup tube.

Since the motor has been out for a while i decided to prime the oil using the oil priming tool which goes in where the distributor goes and spins the shaft that spins the oil pump. The motor is off the car.

When i run the tool with an electric drill CCW, i can hear hissing sounds on the lifters and also if I were to unplug the little port on top of the oil filter holder assembly the oil squirts. In fact the drill becomes harder to spin as soon as it start. So i don't think is an issue with the new pump.

What puzzles me is that I have not touched anything inside the engine that could cause this, so I am not sure what is happening.

Can someone give me some ideas, does the motor have to be running for the oil to flow, how does the oil flow from the lifters to the pushrods?

Should I be worry about this, or will the engine work fine once it is running?

Sometimes it just does not get all the way up to the rockers with just a drill. And sometimes it takes a long while to just dribble a bit.

I learned the hard way - spin the engine while priming- the spinning cam delivers the oil to the rockers
