Oil filter

Is there a larger oil filter that will fit the '72 Olds 350. I know Fram is a ph 25, but is there one that holds a more oil? I know to stay away from Fram also. I'd read that maybe the ph 11 fits and holds more oil. Or is that only for Toronados?

I would agree about the fram filters, don't use them. I personally like wix (part # 51258) and they are all the same filter for toro's, cutlass, 98 or whichever. They started using a skinnier filter for the olds 307 and such in early 80's I believe. I Know this probably opened a can or worms for everyone to say what oil filter is best, lol !!

Back in the early 1980's I rebuilt a 455 for my 1971 Cutlass Supreme. I used Amsoil as that was one of the few synthetics around at the time. I also installed a bypass filter system that had two large filters, maybe a quart or more each. They had what looked like felt doughnuts compressed and supposedly would filter the whole system every few minutes at highway speed. A lot of trouble, but when I pulled the heads off at 80,000 miles (mostly highway) I could still see the crosshatching in the cylinder bores. So if you want to go the extra effort I'd suggest using your choice of synthetic oil and install bypass filters in addition to one in the stock location. Using synthetic and keeping it clean worked for me. John

Run a Wix or NAPA filter.Whether you mount it on the block,or use a remote mount. I run a single remote filter. It goes from the block to the cooler,to the filter,to the block.

I wouldn't bash FRAM so generically. I agree, I would never run a FRAM filter on a Cummins diesel...they don't filter well.

On an Olds engine, I've used FRAM HP2 filters with much success. They are an oversize filter but will still fit inside headers when mounted on the block. I've never had oil pressure problems when using them and I too have dismantled an engine that looked new inside after using them.

It's all preference...you're going to get so many different responses.

Cool. Thanks. I was mainly looking for 1 quart(or more) filters to slightly increase the oil capacity in my 350. I know everyone has different preferences on types of filters. I can say I tried a Fram PH 8A because I read that it would fit and holds a little over a quart but it did not fit.

The PH 8A is used on small block Ford V8's and Small and Big block Chrysler V8's.....

Bill Trovato recommends the Wix 51258. I compared its specs to the larger Wix 51049 and found the burst strength, filtration in microns, etc. to be significantly better on the physically smaller 51258, which Carquest markets as 85258, if they are telling me the truth that their filter is the same. I recently cut apart a 51258 and the can is rather thick steel, matching the spec I saw of 345 psi burst strength. It has 19 micron filtration; 9-11 gpm.

BTW, search the 'net and you will find the 51258 for a bit over $4 vs. more like $8 at many stores.

I doubt you will find any argument that Wix is one of the best. I have heard NAPA Gold is made by Wix. I think the bigger issue is rather than adding a couple pints of oil is the amount of filter surface. Wix is also made in the USA. That is enough for me. I know there are other good filters out there but I don't think Fram is one of them. Just my 2 cents.

Fram is manufactured in a plant in Ontario Canada as well as other locations in North America.

Do some digging around the 'net on Fram filters. Buy the Wix and be done with it. NAPA Gold filter is the Wix filter.

If more ppl did the same digging on Fram Oil Filters against other leading Oil Filter manufacturers Fram would probably whither away.....

Ive cut a fram filter open at work as well as a Purolator classic and a Bosch. Fram uses cardboard end caps on the inside of the filter versus other brands that use metal end caps. They just aren't a good design.

Hello! ME? I wont pull ANY punches on fram oil filters. On my old 73' SS chevelle, Sportsman street/ drag car, I had TWO separate insidents where "FRAM" oil filters "Wadded up" inside on the starting line! When the oil light comes on,....race over!. I contacted "ALLIED SIGNAL" who own's "fram" and I got "gee that's too bad" I havent used a fram filter since! (screw's up face and spits on the ground!)
Ok, now for the right filters...yes, the PF-31 is the correct, larger size filter.. IF you can find one. Next, the Wix corp. makes NAPA's oil filters...have no doubt. so the numbers listed above are good numbers, as stated by the member above... "MY 442"
Baldwin-B-9, Wix-1049 & 51258 and Napa's 51049. Mondello racing recomends "Hastings" but if you compare web sites, you will find they are the same Co. as Baldwin...I dont know who owns who, but they'er the same. nuff said!

This is an old thread, however, when I ran a fram on my 455 it had a slight knock on start up for maybe 20 seconds. Why? I don't know. Switched to wix and napa gold and it has not happened since. I run a high volume oil pump if that makes a difference.

I use the blue STP from Autozone because I can't stand the owner of the NAPA store where I could get a Wix or NAPA gold.
But this time I did find a AC that fit at OReileys .

I run Fram oil filters on my Olds and never have problems. You can run Wal Mart oil and cheap chinesium filters as long as your change your oil regularly.

The way I look at it........how much is your engine worth to you? Not much? Go ahead and use crap oil & filters. I use the good stuff. All oil is not the same......neither are filters.

My local NAPA store has been a sponsor on my car for the last 13-14 yrs. Great bunch of guys (family owned) and they will bend over backwards to help. So my NAPA store is much different than yours I take it.

I have to agree with the negative reports about NAPA auto parts store personell. I worked at NAPA's Glendale,Ca. store and the manager there IS a real DICK. Customers were constantly complaining about his customer skills and he constantly put down everyone (employees) in the store. BUT... he produced a good bottom line for the company, so guess where he is today.......na na na napa no way....

The ac delco PF31 crosses to a Cummins/ Fleetguard LF3538 and is still in production. I ordered one and will try it on my 400. I will let you guys know how it checks out. Fleetguard lists it as an upgraded filter from the PF31. If you guys have never heard of or used Fleetguard filters, they make the highest quality filters I have ever cut apart. I have cut open a lot of filters too. I have seen many FRAM filters "wadded up" inside as a few others have posted here. Napa/ wix filters look ok inside. I have never seen one come apart and destroy an engine...

A word of caution Mobil 1 filters have been sued by several companies and individuals over their oil filters destroying their engines in their brand new cars, STP is one of the WORST oil filters out there!!! Stick with Wix or Napa gold and the Napa in my town sucks also BIG TIME!!! I have to drive 35 miles to another Napa that is a good one!!! Its all in the personel!! NOT the company.
