Hi, have a question on a possible lifter problem, its a 1969 455 +40 over, about 1200 miles on it now runs perfect, it has the factory rockers on it, since new it has a lifer that ticks right from start up pass side, as it runs about 15 mins later its gone!! it slowly gets quieter then gone, you can drive it anywhere at that point and its quite even after shutdown hrs later, if it sits over night it will do the same thing, is there some additive i can put in there, i do have a new set of rockers that i could try on that side to see if that would take care of it ?? any suggestions would be great thank you john...

 

If you are using a thin oil such as 10W-30, a 15W-40 may help. Although I don't often recommend this, an oil additive from Lucas, BG or Wynn's could also help.

Are you fairly certain it is valve train noise? A small exhaust leak can sound similar and they can disappear as components expand with heat.

sugar bear, i use brad peen green oil, 10w40 yes i have had exhaust leaks and was fooled, this is for sure a rocker clack or lifter ??

 

Would not think it to be a rocker then, rather a lifter bleeding down overnight as you initially mentioned. Yes I'd try an additive Lucas, BG, Wynn's etc.

I like to use rislone engine treatment, just follow the directions. It will cleanup and in most case fix a contaminated lifter.

 

Hey thanks so much for your input, my thought was possibly the cam lobe may be an issue ?? ive herd people say cams will go out anywhere from 100 miles to 1500 miles, but it has done this right from the stat up, so iam thinking like my 2 comments that ive got here that its just a lifter bleed down like sugar bear said and yourself !! iam going to give that stuff a try, i hope it will take care of it cuz it runs so dam good!! Not going to say it is impossible...but it is VERY unlikely to be the camshaft. Two reasons, the noise would occur all the time vs. going away and the noise reoccurring after sitting overnight is a classic symptom of a lifter.
