getting ready to redo the engine

455 F block.

Few things: (looking for any info to help me with my first build)

1) I have the engine torn down to the block I have it all identified, it needs to go to a machine shop to get bored honed etc.it is in some rough shape right now, before I take it to the shop is there anything I should know before hand ex. (specs of the engine)?
(Im in process of finding some new heads the ones on mine were J's)

2) Im making this a stick shift, I was told that the crank needs to be machine or something to work with man. trans. just looking for some more info on this, I do have a block that can work with manual trans.

3) I was told that the crank spun a bearing being my first engine build what should I look for for any damage, would it be a problem with the block or crank or both?

My goal for this engine is to get it to around 400hp, 400 torque at some reasonable price my budget is very tight so it's going to be a slow build to get my funds built up.
I want to say limit it to $5000 would that be enough to get me there?

Yeah, be sure the shop understands that this is NOT a Chebby motor. In particular, be sure they understand the need to get the valve tips at the correct dimension when they do the heads.

Depends on whether the spun bearing is a main or rod bearing. If a main, there will likely be damage to both the crank and the block. If a rod bearing, there will be damage to the crank and the rod.

Well, considering that some versions of the 455 were rated at 400 HP and 500 ft lbs stock, I think your goal of only 400 ft lbs is a downgrade. You'll have to try to make that little torque.

Also when boring for new pistons, the shop should have the new pistons and fit the bore to them. Some shops will just go ahead and do a overbore, clean it up and give it back. If you are assembling it, give them the pistons. When they return it the pistons should be numbered for the cylinder they fit.
I do not know if a bore plate is reccomended for all rebuilds on Olds, or just HP ones. Someone comment on this.

And then the MAW's should kick in and have it align honed, balanced, etc.

At least have the align bore checked. Always balance it and yes always hone it with a torque plate whenever possible.
