Newbie: Getting the Olds ready for the road!
Hello, all. A fresh newbie here. I'm done quite a bit of research on these forums already but I thought this post couldn't hurt. I have a '56 88 with 70,000 miles. I'm hoping to have her inspection-ready and driving pretty by the spring. A basic tune-up and test drive has yielding no major problems. The carb probably needs a rebuild but she shifted fine and I didn't notice any odd noises. No smoke from the exhaust - blue or white. Operating temp seemed normal. Below I've listed some things I've done or plan to do. Is there anything else I should consider? Are there specific problem areas i should be aware of? I concerned mostly with any mechanical issues as I have a good grasp of the body work, etc. Any help would be appreciated.
Full engine tune-up
Oil change/filter
Replace differential fluid (is a good synthetic OK?)
Replace trans fluid (once I can drive her to a shop that has the trans fluid sucker machine)
New rubber brake lines
Inspect brakes - rebuild cylinders, components as needed
Fresh gas w/ lead substitute (I believe these are the original heads)
New gaskets as I come across them (valve covers, manifold, etc.)
Thanks!!

Welcome to the website. Make sure you post a picture when you get the chance. What you have planned is pretty comprehensive. You should also consider getting the carburetor rebuilt like you mentioned. Make sure you install a new fuel filter in it. You should also probably have the transmission flushed when you take it to a shop for a fluid change. You can check out the following website for a transmission filter.
