455 fuel pump recommendations

Hey guys,

I'm looking for some recommendations for a fuel pump from my 455. It's probably in the 450+ hp range. I can't find any from Edelbrook or Holley that fit, but I've seen a Carter muscle car series pump that puts out 120 gph with 5.5-6.5 psi. Is this adequate for my motor? Looking for ideas.

Thanks,
Dave

Dave, I put that Carter fuel pump on my 455. It works great. If you want a "hi-performance" mechanical fuel pump this is the only option that I know of.

Thanks olds64.

Do I have to have a return line fitting on the pump? My car has the 3 line system, supply, return, and emmisions.

Look into the Airtex 40736, about 30 bucks from Advance Auto. A friend of mine had one on his 66 Olds. It ran 12.30s with that pump.

This pump will not fit if you use Edelbrock or Pro-Comp heads

Wow! Too rich for my blood.

I'll probably go with the carter.
Do I need a pump with a return if my car has a return line or can I just leave it disconnected?

If your car already has a return line I would get the pump with the return line. That is what I did on my 71 98.

In reference to the Carter pump- I am running the Carter pump on my 455 with Edelbrock heads. I did have to do a little filing in order for it to fit. No major cutting or water jacket problems. Also, no lack of fuel.

Ziff, I've also heard that Edelbrock heads get in the way of the fuel pump.

BTW Dave, I think that fuel pump you have a link to will work perfectly for you. Please note that if you have braided stainless steel fuel lines from the fuel pump to the carburetor you will need to get a 5/8" male inverted flare / AN adapter to put the braided stainless steel hose on the fuel pump. This adapter is hard to come by at auto parts stores. When I installed the braided stainless steel fuel line on my 71 98 I had to search hi and lo for the adapter. I finally found it at a specialty hydraulics store. I paid $10 for it (fortunately they are only about $2 on Summit).

Thanks olds64, that's exactly what I'm doing. Will this work?

Dave, I'm not sure if that will work or not. I'm certain that the Carter fuel pump needs a male fitting with inverted flare (since the stock fuel line went from the pump to the carburetor). I believe the NPT threads don't have an inverted flare.

On my 455 in the 57 Olds I filed the Edelbrock head to fit the fuel pump. On the one for the 48 Olds I dimpled the fuel pump just a tad. Both ways work but it the future I will always dimple the fuel pump

Do you have a part number for the fitting from Summit that worked?

Dave, the second part is the one you want! I bought the same part from a local hydraulics store and I had to pay over $10 for it. At least the guy had what I needed though, I was itching to get the car running that day.

The Holley red electric pump with no mechanical pump will work.
