Struggling on first gear. Why?

I was driving my 1968 442 (automatic trans) today to run errands. She was running just fine the whole day, but after dinner something was wrong. When I was stopped at a light and started going, she was shaking A LOT. Like she was gonna stall. But then when I let go of the gas and slowly got back on the gas she was fine. This would continue for all the stops. On the freeway, she's fine. Any ideas why this might be happening? My mechanic doesn't open until Monday...

My mechanic found the problem. The clip on the distributor was broken.
