My 1970 W30 discussion thread

The car is at a friends garage and he is getting it running but I cannot keep it there much longer once he has everything else done. I need to reformat photos and then I can post the barn find photos. David

The dust is priceless. You could probably swap it for the parts you need.

Not only do you need the correct parts you should look for parts which are appropriately dated for the car's build date. I have been tracking build dates vs carb dates for 258 carbs. Here is a link to the thread 7040258 (70 W30 Auto) Date Codes vs Vehicle Build Date - ClassicOldsmobile.com The carbs were built on a rather limited number of dates. Known build dates are in the post.

I don't know anything about the distributor dates. Maybe someone else has information.

Thanks guys. I will post more info and some more picks as I get them assembled. Yes it has a wing. Yes the dates matter. Trim tag is 02A build date. Unlike so many restored or built cars out there, one thing is for sure about this car. You can tell or see everything that was ever done to this car since the day it left the dealership. And stuff has been done as you would expect. After market radio, headers, Also never left a fifty mile radius in the Texas Oklahoma panhandles from day one. Never saw a drop of moisture probably it’s whole life.

Have not been even able to get inside the car while it has been in my friends garage/shop to find the build cards. Interior has never been touched

The owner in the panhandle of Oklahoma who had the car since 1986, the current title date, tried to make the car run better when he first bought it so took off the water pump, fan and shroud etc to the timing chain then just quit. 36 years went by.

Underside of hood is not corrosion, just dirt and dust. Will clean up extremely well.

Found the green horn pad, mint,in the trunk for a vista cruiser wheel. That was what it came with. Maybe the wheel is still out in western Oklahoma, do not know. Anybody gave a green wheel???? Found a great black one for now and put the insert in it but green is needed.

Absolutely amazing!! You should get in touch with "Stefano" on here. That looks like a great candidate for the barn find section of MCACN.

How often do you see a frame off car or a fake built car with one of these on the back? So important to identify the city it showed up in.

Thats one hell of a find, you need to tell that story at some point..you just never know whats still lurking in sheds, garages and barns yet still. I was telling a guy just The other day that there’s gotta be a few more 1966 W30s hanging around in a shed, garage a field somewhere. Out of the original 54 only 17 or 18 I’ve been identified. Now I know plenty of went to the junkyard but I still think there’s one or two out there.

I have one major avenue to pursue that I have not gotten to yet. I live in Oklahoma City. The panhandles are easy access. For those of you who do not know Oklahoma is perhaps the only state in the union that has records going back to the 60’s and 70’s. They were well known to be available in the 80’s until a rotary machine carrying them broke down. Suddenly no more records. Decades later DMV downloaded the data and saved it!!!!! My plan is to take the 1986 Title to DMV and see if they can pull up maybe the Texas title as it came into the state. They usually did that. Then I am back to Perryton and maybe first or second owner. The town is so small I might find someone who remembers the car who still lives there. LOL

For me this is the fun stuff and what makes a car like this so different from your average frame off. 👍

Got help with the carb. Still need a distributor. 1111979. My mechanic say we may have to work on the one that was with the car which is sort of a wast really, because it is not correct. Thanks for any help. Hard to find I know. David

Happy Independence Day weekend David!

I have a pretty nice spare, driver quality green deluxe steering wheel and I’m in OKC too. Sending you a PM, give me a holler.

Getting a numbers match distributor is nice but from a standpoint of running its not really any different than a regular 442 distributor, especially on automatic cars. 4 speed cars distributor have rubber stops from the factory for limiting advance and total timing etc. I don’t believe the atomatic cars distributor was any different than a factory 442 of the same year..only the numbers stamped on it.

Thanks Andy. I assumed because it was so specific A one year only item it was important for performance. I will work with what we have obviously for now. Two more photos showing the way cleared to finally leave garage after 36 years.
