7040258 (70 W30 Auto) Date Codes vs Vehicle Build Date

I am doing some research on 1970 W30 automatic transmission carburetor date vs vehicle build date. Below is the data I have so far. Carburetor dates are from carburetors which appear to be original. If you have or know of a 1970 W30 automatic car with the original carburetor, I would appreciate the carburetor date code and vehicle build date. I will edit this post as new information is added.

Carburetor Date Code - Vehicle Build Date (qty of cars built that week in the data)

2659 (Mon, 9-22-69) - Purchased from an Ad in JWO during the mid 80s, noted in post #51 in this thread
2809 (Tues, 10-07-69) - 5th week of Oct 1969 (3), 1st week of Nov 1969, 4th week Nov 69
2939 (Thurs, 10-23-69) - From ebay ad (see post #53)
3079 (Mon, 11-03-69) - 4th week of Nov 1969, 4th week of Dec 1969 (2)
3329 (Fri, 11-28-69) - 4th week of Dec 1969, 1st week of Jan 1970, 2nd week of Jan 1970, 5th week of Jan 1970
0160 (Fri, 01-16-70) - 1st week of April 1970 (2)
0920 (Thurs, 4-2-70) - 1st week of June 1970 (3)
1240 (Mon, 5-4-1970) - 2nd week of Jun 1970, 3rd week of Jun 1970

July 28, 2015 edit: Added second 0160 carb, removed 3269 and 0710 pending verification of original carbs, 6-13-14 added 3329 for 5th week Jan 70

Jun 25, 2018 edit: Added 4th week of Dec 69 to the 3329 group

August 24, 2020 edit: Added a second 2659, Added date code 2939 from ebay ad

Febuary 24, 2023 added a third 0920 from an Ad here posted by Vader

My car was built 11/18/69, but it did not have the original carb on it. What would have been on it ? 2809 ?

It could have any of the date codes preceding your car's build. Car parts aren't like food; the factory didn't necessarily rotate stock to make sure the oldest parts were used first.

My car was built same day and my carb is a 2809 for what that's worth.

Steven, is your carb original to the car ? I know we communicated a while back about our cars being built on the same day.

well.... technically no. I sent out my original carb to get rebuilt at the carb shop in CA over a decade ago - they closed down while my carb was there so and I never saw it again. Someone has mine somewhere. I took pictures of it before I sent it in so I knew what info was on the carb. I also scrawled in a few marks strategically on a few services so if I ever see a 7040258 for sale with my marks I know its mine

Anyway the number/date code I have now is the exact number and date that was on the car - so yes that's the numbers my car came with but technically the carb on it is not the original one. So it should be good for yours.

I am going to remove these from the list. I think the data came from Real Olds Power where I had a duplicate to this thread. It appears as if they had a crash and that thread is gone.

first week build of April 1970, 7040258 - 0160

so this carb was sitting on the shelf for almost three months before it found a car to sit on.

Yes it is from what I was told. What I meant is that (as we know) these W30 parts were built in batches so it took a while for the carb to be put on a car. carb was made in January, car made in April. I never saw a carb dated 0160 until I got this car.

Very interesting, I have no doubt that many of these parts sat for awhile before being used. Would you please post a photo of the stamping to this thread? There are those who will doubt a carburetor from an unknown W carburetor build date. I think we are finding that there are a few dates which have been previously unknown. There may have been three or four dates where a majority of the 7040258s were built, but there are some other build dates as well. I have the 2659 dated carburetor. I have had people question it. It was not original to my car but I purchased it in the mid 80s from an ad in JWO. The stamping sure look legitimate to me.

That is a new date. Would you post some additional photos of the stamp area. What do you know of the history of this carburetor?

Here is a clearer picture... The car is a 1970 Sports Coupe, build date second week of June. Purchased by me in February of 1987 in Phoenix, AZ. All W-30 equipment was installed and operational, looked to be completely untouched except for the paint was reversed to black with gold stripes. Open picture link in new tab for jumbo size.

Thanks, that is the first 0124 I have seen. There was also one posted in the thread: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...fo-needed.html I will add both of them to the data.

Once again, the addition of these dates shows the theory that the W carburetors were built on only four specific dates is incorrect. With these added we are up to seven verified 7040258 carburetor build dates.

Refer to the first post in the tread for the data.
