Ignition won't turn back to accessory

I'm in the process of of replacing all the locks on my 442 and I've run into an issue with the ignition lock cylinder - the service manual says to turn it back to accessory but the current one won't turn back that far. The key is worn and I've wiggled it while trying to get it to turn back with no luck. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Alright - so we loosened the next section on the steering column and got it to let us kick it back to accessory, but still not having luck with the release on the lock assembly - does anyone have a good color pictures on this process? The B&W service manual photos aren't exactly the best. Thanks!

It doesn't matter which position the lock is in - it will come out in any position.
Just depress the spring-loaded catch and pull the cylinder straight out.

If the backdrive linkage from the steering column to the trans is not installed (or not adjusted properly), be sure the ear on the engine end of the steering column is all the way up (clockwise when viewed from the front of the car).

Ray, everything you will ever want to know about steering columns and more from a retired Saginaw design engineer (Jim Shea).

Awesome - I think this is what we were missing...

"If your steering column has never had the lock cylinder replaced, there will most likely be a thin die casting metal membrane covering the slot."

When we were working on it this past weekend we could have sworn that should have been right about where it should have been.
