14 x 6 SS1's - chrome
Going to look at a set of 14 x 6 all chrome SS1's. I know there were versions of these wheels that fit disc brake cars. Is there an easy way to identify the disc brake versions? Is there a significant difference in desirability and/or value between the two diff versions? Assuming they are in nice, rust free condition, what are they worth - ballpark? Did anybody reproduce these rims? Thanks!
I don't know about 70 or newer SSI disc brake wheels (I think they were 14X7 but that's just a guess), but the '69 14X6 disc brake SSI wheels will have an "LY" code stamped into the rim (visible with the tire on the wheel) on the back side of the wheel. The '69 drum brake SSI wheels will have an "LE" stamp and the earlier SSI drum brake wheels have no two-letter stamp on the rim at all.
There weren't a whole lot of '69 "LY" wheels made as far as I can tell and it appears they were only available for about the last 4-5 months of production (March-July 1969) for the '69 model A-body cars.
I would expect to pay more for an "LY" wheel than an "LE" wheel.
