Question about my new CRAGAR SS direct drill wheels

I recently purchased a set of CRAGAR SS wheels that are direct drilled. They are:

15 X 7 61C 5X4.75 with a 4 inch BS on the front

15 X 10 61C 5X4.75 with a 5.5 BS on the rear

My car is a 1972 Cutlass 442 that is original as far as the suspension and when I put the wheels on, it looks like the CRAGAR acorn/conical seat lugs only tighten down maybe 1/2 inch on the stock stud threads. Is that sufficient? I've owned a few sets of direct drill CRAGAR SS back in the day and don't remember this issue. But then, at 70+ years old, maybe I forget and I'm worrying too much.

I can't imagine that every Cutlass owner who bought a set of CRAGAR SS wheels would have to change out all of the wheel studs to use them?

The amount of threads depth into the lug nut should be minimum the same as the diameter of the stud.

Anyone else on here put a set of direct drill CRAGAR SS on their 70 - 72 Cutlass? I'm not going to be happy if I need to put longer studs on all 4 spots? I guess I'll just remove the CRAGARs and pile them up and put the original SSII wheels back on to drive it a bit before winter! I have enough crap going on putting it back together after the re-paint.

Cragar sells a long shank/conical lug nut that will work with those wheels. I recently purchased a set thru Summit Racing. Search Cragar lug nuts on their site. Even the salesmen there didn'tknow they were available. A-27802-4?

I have not run these yet, but they definitely appear to have sufficient thread engagement.

Well......Thank You, ThankYou, ThankYou 3shields!

I too talked with a person at CRAGAR to make sure I ordered the correct wheels as well as the lug-nuts! She, at the time, was the most knowledgeable person I had talked to at CRAGAR! She made a point of telling me to be sure to order the lug-nut part number and I used her part numbers ( A-27802B-4 for the lugs) when I ordered wheels and lug-nuts from Summit! And then, I realized that something was wrong when I installed the CRAGAR SS and the suggested lugs on my '72 442! It will cost over $100 to make these work. You just made my day!

I'm going to bitch to CRAGAR about this misinformation since there are others who may have bought the same lugs as I was told to, installed them and are running them right now and who could be in danger of losing or effing up a wheel/their whole car or even injuring people! Maybe they'll refund my initial cost and/or put a note out that the long shank conical nuts need to be used!

Thanks again,
OLE442

I have a full set of the long shank conical CRAGAR lug-nuts coming Wednesday! I'll make the switch then. Summit has said they will refund the money for the first set. I wonder how many people out there are running direct drill CRAGAR SS on their GM car with only 5 turns of the lug-nuts holding the wheels on??

Got the long shank conical lugs in today and installed them on the back two wheels. The previous lugs only went on the studs almost 5 turns. These long shank lug-nut go on around 11 to 12 turns so that is much better. I'd imagine there are a few guys out there driving around with lug-nuts on their wheels with only 5 turns on them. It appeared to me to only be like a half an inch contact with the wheel studs!!!

And, Summit sent me a return label and I am sending the first ones back for credit!

Post up a picture of your car with them mounted. I may rethink my wheel options.

I haven't washed the car yet so the T/A's letters are still blue! I think it sits pretty nice and those 10 inch wide rear tires and the front tires don't appear to rub anywhere!

I think it looks pretty classy and sassy! Not in scrappie, Alain or WTHIRTY1's league but OK for a DIYer elderly old man! LOL!

They look nice, are you running 295-50-15 on the rear?

Yes, on the 15 X 10 with a 5.5 backspace CRAGAR SS!
