New wheels or lift kit?

Last year I replaced the front drums with disc brakes on my 65 Cutlass. There is some rubbing on the interior of the fender when I cut the steering wheel all the way and get some body roll. I have some 14x6's with 3.5 inch backspace on the front now. My local mechanic said that I could try 4 inch backspacing (might hit tie rod), but that he would recommend 1-1.5 inch lifts on all fours. Any suggestions, cautions or ideas?

I wouldn't put lifts on my car. If your tires are scrapping it is either the backspacing/offset on your wheels or the size of your tires. Here is an excellent wheel and tire size calculator:

Springs could be sagging.

Step one, find a mechanic who understands suspension geometry and handling. Step two, get new wheels.

Thanks. I think the previous owner put on lowering springs. Joe, unfortunately every mechanic I talk to has a new opinion. For someone who is trying to learn on the fly, it's frustrating. But, if I've learned anything it is to ask a lot of questions, then do your homework.
