Center cap decals

Got some center cap decals the replace the completly faded originals on my SS1 wheels. My question: How to remove the old decals which seem to be 'petrified' after 40 years?

One thing I've tried that seems to work (takes a lot of patience) is to use a hair dryer and heat the thing up until the glue behind the decal turns liquidy; then gradually remove the decal. It takes a lot of patience, though - just heat them up, one at a time, until you can lift each decal.

Thanks Randy, I'll give that a try.

Either I'm not generating enough heat or I have a lack of patience (or both). May have to try an industrial-strength heat gun because they are not budging! I've tried a sharp knife to try and get under the edge but it's just 'peeling' up tiny pieces off the edge of the metal decal. I may have to unbolt the center cap and drill a tiny hole to 'push' it out from behind but I would hate to have to resort to that. Anybody else have any ideas?

It really takes lots of heat. It might work better if you could remove the center caps and heat them from the back side. That's about all I can offer.

Mike - the last time I replaced those on a set of caps I just put them over the existing emblems...they were so thin you could not tell...and you already know the old ones aren't going to fall off on their own. I think I might have used a little thicker glue underneath but as I said, you couldn't tell afterwards and it sure was a lot less trouble than what you're going through.

Thanks Scott! That's EXACTLY what I ended up doing (with a smear of adhesive on the back in addition to the sticky backing) and they look perfect!
