Hi all, I just did a front disc brake conversion on my 67 Cutlass. The company I bought the brakes from said I may need to get different rims as the drum wheels may not fit over the discs. He was right. I did some reading on other threads on this topic here but didn't really find the answer I was looking for. The new brakes are standard factory 11 inch but drilled and slotted. I tried using the factory caliper mounts (because I just happen to have a set) as I saw one person here was able to do that and it resolved their issue. Didn't work for me.
I really want to keep my original hubcaps and dont want to go to a 15" wheel. Any ideas on what 14" wheel will fit so I can maintain my stock look with the hubcaps?
Except for the 1969 Hurst/Olds, every 1967-1972 Cutlass that came from the factory with front disc brakes came with 14" wheels. The problem is that there are two styles of 14" wheels, those that only clear drum brakes (on the right in this photo) and those that clear discs (left). Outboard is to the left for both wheels. Note the difference in the shape of the rim where it drops to the center (yellow arrow vs green arrow). Get any GM 14" wheels from a 1970-newer A/F/X body car and you'll be fine.
Excellent Joe, thank you very much. I suspected that what you said might be the case but wasn't sure. The pics helped a lot.
I am just finishing up a complete front to rear suspension rebuild and a complete rebuild of the entire steering components. All new ball joints, quick ratio steering box, BMR 1" lowering springs, KYB street/track shocks, tubed rear lower control arms, larger front sway bar and adding a rear (hence the new rear lowers) all polyurethane bushings and boots. And of course the front disc brake conversion. I'll do the rears later. Literally everything will be new under this car. I hope to post some before and after pics when it is finished. The guy who had it before me cut the front coils, and not even, so it not only smacked the ground all the time, it leaned to the left.
