65 Cutlass Muscle Car Look or Pro Touring Look

Hey Everyone,

So the time has come to select wheels for my 65 Cutlass and the wife and I have two different ideas. I want a muscle car look (small tires in the front 15x7 and big tires in the back 15x8) while the wife wants the pro touring look (17x8 rims all the way around). The car right now is stock height. If anyone has either of these two setups can you please post some pictures of your ride and what wheel and tire combo size you have and if you lowered the front, back or both and how much. Also if you have/had experience with both setups, which one did you like better and why. Thanks for all of the help.

I went with American Racing Wheels. 17x7 on front and 17x8 on rear. 2 inch drop spindles out front and I think stock springs out back.

This is a 70 so its not apples to apples, but I went with staggered 17's. Kind of a middle ground between Musclecar & Pro Touring. 17x7 & 17x8 with 225/55 & 245/50.
I'd also add that with the price of a decent name brand 15" tire these days, you;ll get 17" rims and better tires for the same $$ if not a little less.

It will rub hitting driveway dips hard when turning.
215/50x17 front, 235/50x17 rear.

F70-15's on Hurst Dazzler Rims / Lowered Springs

I went with 15x7 Hurst Rims and original Firestone Bias Ply Redlines in an F70-15 for my car. I used the Summit Racing lowering springs so a little more than an inch all around. The offset on the Hursts' is only 4 1/2" so the stick out a little with the large tires. I do rub when turning sharp, so just have to be careful. The 15x8 Hursts' have the correct 4 3/4" back space, but not sure how they would tuck in the wheel well. Someday I'll get an original set of 14" Hurst rims and Redlines for this car. Best of luck getting what you want, just remember, this is the fun part of the build!

Oldcutlass,

Thanks for the great info. This is what my wife wants to put on the car with a 17x7 in front and a 17x8 in back. It order for both of us to get want we want, would it be better to stick with the 17x8 wheels in the back or go with a 18x8 in the back. I really prefer a bigger wheel/tire in the back. Thanks again for all of the great info.

The issue with bigger wheels is less sidewall cushion for tires. There is just so much OD that will fit in the wheel well.

After doing some research it looks like the widest I should go in the rear would be either 265 or 275. Does that sound about right.

Love this classic look. Where did you get the dog dishes? What are your tires dimensions? Do you have Larger pics?

Thx a lot!

The dog dishes are 1 year only 64's original to the car, the rears are 235x70x15 the fronts are 205x65x15-a bit to small I'm going to use 1 for a spare and most likely use 205 or maybe a 215x70 in the front. Going to lower the rear another inch soon.

Love it

Sharp ride (i've learned a new expression today!)

I really like 'em, i' have to find the same rims, in black! OEM dog dishes should be hard to find and expensive...i'll try to get chromed baby moon or something like that.

I also like the exhaust position, it makes the rear lines thinner and should be a little bit louder from inside. Very nice car! Thanks for infos!

Those 15x7 GM steelie's came on the Big Cars and are plentiful. In most cases they came from GM in black. As for the dog dish hub caps, different years are easier to fund and a lot less $$$. I chose the exhaust turn downs like the 66-67 Chevelles SS 396 cars. I think GTO's did the same with 2 pipes on each side back in the day.

Donolds,

What is the backspacing on your rims? I purchased the Torque Thrust VN215’s 17x7 with 4” of backspacing for the front and Torque Thrust VN215s 18x8 with 4.5” of backspacing. That is the only backspaces they offered with those rims.

Could not find paper work. I think I have 17x7 on front and 17x8 on rear. Back spacing appears to be 4-4.5”.
I have about 3/4” space between sidewalk and inner lip on rear. Front only will rub slightly with driveway dip.
215/50R17 on front 235/50R17 Yokohama Avid Envigor tires.
