Clueless on wheels/tires

I thought I was going to have to do some major repair on the transmission of my 68 Cutlass Convertible, but got lucky on that and now it looks like I may be able to get some new rims and tires for my car instead. I don't really know anything about getting new wheels and tires or what to look for so I'm coming here for help once again. I have some ideas of the look I want. What do I need to look for in width, tire measurement, etc. Ideally, I describe what I'm looking for and someone can just post the wheel/tire measurements I need . I figured this was a better resource then a NTB.

I really like the retro-mod look on cars so I'm considering Cragar S/S 18" in the back and 17" in the front. Some people have wider tires in the back. Thoughts? How does the bigger wheels handle and are there going to be clearance issues?

Next idea is just have 15" in both front and back, but a little bigger tires in the back.

The style I'm looking at is going to be something like this. Can't decide yet between the aluminum or gray look.

Last note, I currently have drums everywhere. Eventually I would like to convert to disk. Is this going to be an issues with whatever rims I decide?

Sorry for not knowing anything about this. I try to do my own research before hand but just ended up getting more questions.

Here are pics of styles I like:

I am a big fan of 18/18 or 18/19 on these cars. 17/18 just does not look quite right. You also need to consider the stance. The car will need to come down some to look perfect.

I am a bigger fan of 15 inch wheels. If you go with disc brakes all the way around you will need 15s all the way around. Gray also looks good on the color.

Are you saying I'll run into issues if I go the 18 inch route and eventually want to put disks?

He means not smaller than 15. 18's will be fine with drums but it looks goofy without the brakes to match.

I like Richard's thoughts... Staggered 18's and 19's But if you want 17's all around but staggered I'll make you a deal on mine

I say go with 18's all around. There is simply the better tire selection out there for that size wheel. Do so measurements to make sure the wheels and tires fit well with you car. It really goes a log way. Also try to take into consideration and future suspension mods like lowering it. Here is a great tire size guide.

I have Torq Thrusts with tires that only have a few hundred miles on them. Front are 235/45/17 and rears are 275/40/17

I'm going to go get a quote on 18s or 17s all around. Not sure if i'm going to stagger the rims. Any tire brand recommendation and on average how much should a set of them run? Trying to get my final figures estimated.

I would not worry so much on the brand. The trick is finding who makes the tire sizes you want and being able to get a front and rear to match.

I so agree. I am looking at going bigger in the future for atleast the rear tires and what a pain trying to find sizes that match in the smae brans for front to rear. That being said I am running BFG G-Force Sports and think they are a great tire for the price.

These are 17/8 all around. Lowered about 3+ inches. No fender/ground clearance issues.

Looks awesome. Might be going the other route because found a good deal on some 14/15s. I'll see this weekend. Got a quote on the 17s and it was a little pricey

Got lucky on craigslist and found the rims I wanted for a good price. Just got done installing my new "shoes" on my car.

What do you think?

For the price yes. Originally I was thinking I wanted larger rims... found this deal on Craigslist a couple ideas for rims and tires (previously on another 68 cutlass too). I took it as a sign I had to have them

Also keep in mind that if you stagger your wheels you won't be able to rotate them which will effect overall tire life and noise.
