Damn few, but a educated guess would be about 1% survive after 50 years maybe a little more if it was a very popular model.

I was told at the 2011 Nationals by a gent who's 55 was in the senior class that he had researched the 55 super 88 convertibles and only 39 were registered in the US.Where he got this number is beyond me,I haven't found or heard of a service that offers that information but he seemed adamant on that number. Who knows, I just know not many 55 -56 Olds verts are around....Tedd

Thanks Tedd, With the cars I know and cars I find on the web I can count 29-30 88s? I also talked to a person In IL who had a 1954 88 his claim was only 12 1954 88 Convertibles?

I just brought home the Super 88

She has been at the body shop since May. All of the paint is done and now for the glass, bumpers, interior. I still have boxes of parts to go back on.

1956 324 Olds timing notch question

I am helping a friend straighten out a number on issues on a 56 Olds 98 he bought sight unseen on the internet. I read in the manual and it describes a
notch approx 1/4" long on the engine side of the pulley. I have rotated the pulley by hand 360 degrees several times and have not found this notch. The pointer is on the block so what am I missing here.

Thanks in advance.

Citcapp, out of curiosity I went out and checked my 324 and could not find such timing marks eather but I did find a scribed line accross the pulley that was chalked that was used last time we timed the car...Tedd

Mine has a notch,i just replaced it recently. If your having timing issuse mabey its bad.Its hard to tell unless the ballancer is dangling.Mine would move in and out a bit by hand but not turn on the pulley by hand. This caused the timing to lag as the rpm went up and i thought it had a miss or dead cylinder. How many belt grooves do you have? i went from three to two as i only need one,i can take a pic of the old one tomorrow for you if you would like.Glen

Just a thought my harmonic balancer was rebuilt sometime ago I don't know if that would make a difference or not Also this is on a 55 Olds rather than a 56 but they should be the same as far as I know....Tedd

Maybe this one is rebuilt and no mark was made. Guess I have to take #1 to top dead center and make my own mark. sounds like that was done to yours

Thanks

It's the notch seen on the iron ring, circled with a red box. Top edge as viewed installed is one limit, and the bottom is another. CAUTION the iron rings want to move on these engines, especially in hot rod use, and made worse if rubber is in bad shape. It's hard to tell from the camera angle, but the 1952 ring has moved almost an increment in the degree indication seen. You can find the mark way off even on low mileage cars, so if the performance or starting doesn't seem in line with what you see as your lead setting, check it out. CW

Thanks Coldwar. The pulley/damper does not look at all like these. I will take a picture and post it. Maybe that will clear things up

In the '56 balancer on the left, the heavy steel ring nearest the seal is not attached to the pulleys, and in mine, separation and clanging forced me to cut mine off and I never did find a replacement. I have to wonder just how effective it was in the first place...and especially slipping can only defeat its purpose. I wonder if there is an off the shelf replacement...something not too rare or overpriced. In hindsight, perhaps not destroying the ring and cleaning and refilling the rubber gap with silicone or something (on a bench) might have been an idea.....or maybe a bad one. unsure.

Let me note the 1952 is for power steering equipped cars. The single sheave pulley on non power equipped cars does NOT have a balancer ring, it is a simple yoked pulley, and some have a solid cupped pulley with six small ribs and again, no ring. The 1956 is the only 56 engine I have, now I cannot recall if they used the yoke or cupped pulley with no ring as late as 56. Maybe that is what citcapp has.

Coldwar,

The pulley on the 324 in the 56 98 does not have the balancer ring but it does have the three belt grooves and no notch. I now believe this is not the original set up.

I am mistaken about the picture then with looking at it a little closer. Mine was only a two pulley ,but it did have a heavy outer ring that was rubber mounted and failed eventually. Great sharing of information!

the 56 can be one ,two or three pulleys depending on the power options on the car.one for no power ,two for power steering and brakes ,three for power steering brakes and air conditioning.as i said i just replaced mine fusick can have them rebuilt, they also have some ready on the shelf.the balance rings were on all three of mine, single double and triple groved. The rings are vulcanized to the pulley and then balanced.Glen

Just installed a Rockport electric wiper kit in the 56 ... Yes, the bolt behind the motor is not possible to install. The stud and nut mentioned elsewhere on this site is a must-do.
The old cool air cleaner fits fine, the motor doesnt seem to stick out any farther than the vacuum motor did.

Does anyone know how to remove and replace the antenna? I cannot get my hands to the bolt that holds it on. Do i have to remove the inner fender?

I know this is an old thread by I'm hoping someone may be subscribed who doesn't show up often anymore. If anyone with a 56 has a front license plate bracket, a trunk emblem for a 98 with the key latch in tact, or a 6 blade fan off an AC car that they are willing to sell please let me know I am interested! Thanks!
