1957 Oldsmobile front engine mount

Good morning, I hope someone on this forum can help. I replaced the rear engine mounts because I could see they were cracked. With the front engine mount (two pieces), I can see the top of the mount, but it hides the lower mount. I need help in the following way:
  • Is there a way to visually check the mount? From the little I can see, the upper mount is not metal to metal and the distance from its front edge to the cross member is between 1/16" and 1/8".
  • Is there a way to physically test the mount?
  • Should I just assume its bad and replace it?
  • If I replace it, Fusick has the lower mount and suggests re-using the upper mount. I think both the upper and lower mounts have vulcanized rubber sections. Other suppliers offer both the upper and lower mounts. Should I replace both or is that unnecessary?
  • With a new mount, what is the distance between the front edge of the upper mount and the cross member?
Thanks much, David
