1956. 88 engine and transmission removal

Any help would be nice...

I want to remove engine and transmission in one unit if possible this winter for seals and gasket replacement. The 56 shop manual does not address this and was wondering if anyone has done this and has any suggestions, the car is totally stock with dual exhaust.....

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated......thanks

I haven't done one but from what I have read on here, it is better to separate them. That transmission is cast iron and very heavy. If you do it you better have a two ton hoist.

That combo is unbelievably heavy. I would separate the two - the angle you need to tilt the engine and transmission to clear the front bumper is scary

IMHO, don't separate them.

Yes, it's a heavy assembly, but the rear engine mounts are actually integral with the transmission - if you remove the transmission, you'll remove the rear mounts and will have to support the engine.

I've pulled a couple with a regular old fasioned cherry picker - just make sure you have the chains secured good to intake or head bolts with a thick washer.

As previously stated, removing the front clip will make it easier - at least the radiator and the surrounding sheet metal.

As a tip, take the weight off of the motor while removing the rear mounts.

I agree with Olds Dad and I also have removed a few and found it much easier to pull the engine and transmission together. If you do separate the engine and transmission the car is stuck where it is unless your transmission jack is movable .

Remember there are about 28 1/4 inch bolts holding the flywheel( flexplate) on and they are much easier to access out of the car.

I've never taken much more than the radiator and it's supports off the body ( I left the clip alone) and had plenty of room to lift the engine forward and out but I can see where it could be helpful and if you are going to clean it up later you might as well.

Here is a poor quality shot the only one I have of my dad and I pulling a engine but you can see sort of what still on the car....Tedd

Used a 2 ton cherry picker and a transmission adapter tool for my floor jack. Removed the front tin except fenders for access and repaint before reinstallation. Using both tools also made for easier separation of the trans and engine.

I have lifted most of my engines out with the hydraulic bucket off a tractor, works great for me and no worries about weight but I had access to all kinds of farm equipment at my dad's place.
