Can you identify trans in picture? Looking to pick up a trans but the seller says he cant find any numbers on it to identify it.

The length of the body makes me think TH400, but I'm not an expert on transmissions. Check out the following link, it has pictures of the vin location on both the TH350 and TH400. If it is a TH400 1968 or newer there should be a vin stamped there. Also... there should be a place to attach the speedometer cable on the drivers side. If not, then its from a full sized 1970 or older (mid-1960's?). If you want to install it in a 1970 or older full sized than it doesn't matter as they have the speedometer cable attached to the left front wheel. But if your car has the cable to the transmission be sure the one your looking at has the fitting. John

Thats a TH400 trans. There should be a metal tag on the drivers side toward the back with a code stamped into it. That will have the year and calibration code.

 

Also look for an electrical connection just above the pan rail on the left side of the trans. That is for the kickdown.

The trans is suppose to be a rebuilt bop th400 but the owner said he couldnt find the numbers to identify it but has the paperwork from the rebuilder. Is there any reason after a rebuild that the numbers would be removed or covered?

 

Just look at the shape of the pan. That will tell you what it is.

It will look something like this (but without all the metal shavings).

I just picked up a GM 2004R core for $50

It had no tags on it either......if I had to guess as to why ??
I'd guess the rebuild shop wanted someone to know it was not a factory rebuild.

 

it looks like a TH400, and it probably is. has the HD short style tail shaft housing(there is a med. and long). has that beefy cast-in webbing in the bell housing area. has the modulator sticking out at the front above the pan(TH350 sticks out towards the back/facing back), has the electronic kick-down connection(TH350 uses a cable coming out of the passenger side above the pan flange), probably has 13 bolts holding that irregular shaped pan(not square with one corner cut-off)on. has a BOP engine mount configuration, maybe it's a TH 375. they look very similiar, the TH375 has the smaller output shaft identical to a TH350(27 spline, i think the TH400 is 31), and it might have large "TH 375" cast into the housing on the underside. GM used it (375), behind some 350 equipped cars(delta 88, vista cruiser). it's like a light duty 400, less load capicity. TH350 have four bolts retaining the tailshaft housing, TH400's have six.
