How to know if trans is original

Is there any way to know if my TH350 is original or not? VIN stamped on it? I can't recall if I swapped it for another over the years or not.

Yes, I believe starting in 1968 there was a vin stamped in the transmissions. Attached are pictures showing them on a TH350 and TH400. Ignore the Chebby orange on the TH350.... it came out of a parts car that way! These are both BOP transmissions, but I don't know what they originally came out of.

On my 70 TH400 part of VIN (I think the last part) is stamped on the narrow lip above the pan on the driver side (facing out).

I knew mine was the original due to the "Big Red Puddle" in the garage.
The Old Lady is still giving me the "Eye" on that one.

Are the trans's serialized to each individual car, or just for a 'series' of cars? Wonder, since I have the original TH350 out of mine, and was just going to throw it away!

From the 1968 model year on, the trans will have the same VIN derivative stamp as the engine. It matches the first character and last eight characters of the car's VIN.
