Pinion center line offset??

The best that I know. My 64 cutlass has a stock o type axle. I assume it is from a junkyard as the whole bottom of the chunk is crudely painted yellow…. But anyhow…..

I’m building a crossmember for my Muncie and I’m beating my head against the wall trying to get everything centered Is the center line of the pinion offset about an inch?

It sure seems that way. I have measured everything I can find. If I go from the edge where the axle tube joins the differential then everything is even and I think the axle shafts I put in were the same length?? What I’m seeing is not the diff being offset but the pinion in the diff.

I assume that the output shaft of the transmission should be centered between the frame rails. I have pulled a line between the center of the trans and the center of the pinion. The further I get from the transmission the further my line moves

I am taking all of my measurements from the frame and not the body

I have never noticed this on any other car. Except 4wd stuff I guess there’s no issue. And I guess the trans should be centered?

Edit::
ok. I read up and many axles have a offset pinion. I guess I have never noticed until now

Just look at that photo - you can see the offset as compared to the ears for the upper control arms.

And don't lose a lot of sleep over lateral offset. Offset in the vertical plane is a given. Why would offset horizontally be any different? All you care about is total u-joint angle.

Thanks. I’m gonna just move ahead.

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to figure it out. I got my string pulled tight and in my mind it should have been centered… I’ve had the whole car apart so of course I started thinking the worst

Unrelated, but my trans was offset to the drivers side about an inch as well but that was just in the motor mounts
