Weird transmission issues
Hello everyone! I have 64 dynamic with the infamous "Slimjim" transmission.
The car is doing this weird thing where it takes quite a lot of throttle to get the car moving from a stop. It also shifts pretty late in 2nd, maybe 3k rpm. The worst problem though is when coming to a stop, the engine stumbles and lugs, just about dieing until I rev it up.
I don't believe the trans is bad but the TV cable needs some serious adjustment. I know the Burroughs 33-1 tool for the adjustment is non existent. Does anybody have a tool to buy or how to DIY set the linkage correctly? It makes it impossible to drive with the stumbling.
PS, I know it's not a booster issues since it's not plugged in!

Get the TV rod adjusted and see what it does. Slim Jims do weird things. How was it working before you pulled the engine, or did you ever try driving it?
Try a fluid and filter change first. Something may be sticking internally. Fatsco should have the filter. Gummed up internals and poorly adjusted throttle linkage cause a lot of Slim Jim troubles.
Did you ever get the 64 factory shop manual set? An understanding of how the Slim Jim is supposed to work will help.

When slowing to a stop, Slim Jims are designed to stay in third gear until approximately 7 mph, then they drop into first. Third gear at low speed will cause the engine to lug. They are designed this way to avoid being in direct mechanical drive (second gear) while decelerating at low speed. The purpose of this is to allow the fluid coupling to absorb drivetrain anomalies. The fluid coupling is only full in first and third, empty in second.
As mentioned, TV rod adjustment is critical, as is fluid level. An in-tune engine is also important.
