Automatic 200-4R shift issues

Hey olds drivers

I've some annoying problems with the 200-4R transmission on my 81' 98.
If the car is cold the transmission shift almost normal, just at 70-80 km/h and above the transmission falls from 3th gear in the overdrive.
But at operation temprature of the engine the transmission shifts like a cripple. It falls in the overdrive when I push the throttle just a little bit. And I have to push down the throttle the half way that the transmission shifts back to the 3th or 2nd gear. And sometimes the transmission don't shift in lower gear when I drive up a hill, so I have to push down the throttle more than 3/4.
It makes me crazy. Doe's anybody have an idea what that could be ore had similar problems?

check the adjustment of the TV cable. If its too loose it will go into OD too early under light throttle, and not want to downshift soon enough under a load.

Lots of miles/kms in your trans? Fluid nice and red? Has it been overhauled previously?
Sounds like you have some wear and possibly low pressure due to a worn pump. Can you attach a gauge to see about your pressures? This could help diagnose your problem.
Also a worn stator support could have an effect, but it sounds like you might be in need of an overhaul.

X2 what Texas said. Pressure testing is the best way to assess the health of your "hydraulic pump" (transmission). 200s in stock form aren't noted for they're strength and durability. If in fact it does need a rebuild be sure to take it to a knowledgeable trans shop that will install the needed up-grades to the knows weak areas. You could also purchase a crate trans with all the modern up grades with a warranty to boot.

Hmm.. thanks for the answers.
The trans has about 230'000 KM and I don't think that it has ever been overhauled. I don't have a gauge, but I think I can get one.
The transmission has a little bit too much oil in it. Could that also make problems like this?

Not real sure how far that is but let's just go with a lot. I think that as early as that trans is it doesn't have any hardened parts or other upgrades the factory did as time passed. You probably need to upgrade before something catastrofic happens and it hurts some of the hard parts.
The pressure gauge generally has a hose that threads into the driver side of the trans near the electrical plug. There is an 1/8th" threaded plug you remove and thread in your hose.

In my experience, any TH-200 4R with more than 100-125k miles on it which hasn't been rebuilt is living on borrowed time. I'd say you're doing pretty good.

230k KMs are ~144k miles. Like you said: a lot
@TexasT: how does this gauge look like? Can you post a picture? And where can I get one?

I think the problem is a low pressure, because with right adjusted TV cable the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd gear quite late. Because of missing pressure?

This is the kit I picked up off of eBay.
Any hydraulic shop should be able to make you a hose and sell you a gauge though.
