The pan is probably the best place to put it, it will give you a average temp. The cooler line that goes to the radiator will tell you the temp of the oil coming out of the converter, it’s always going to be much hotter than anyplace else.

Here is what B&M recommends..............
STEP 2.Locate the oil return line to the transmission. OnChrysler and most Ford transmissions, this is the line to therear of the transmission case. On GM TH-350, TH-400, TH-700R4, and Powerglide transmissions, this is the upper oilline to the transmission case. On GM TH-200, TH-200R4,4L80E and Ford AOD transmissions, this is the lower oil lineto the transmission case.Note: This location is recom-mended to monitor the true transmission temperaturegoing in, as well as checking the oil cooler efficiency.

If so, then the return line location should show the same temperature as the fluid in the pan, correct?

Hey , I put the temp sender in the return line as manufacturer recommended. It worked fine. I am not sure why you would want to put a hole and a sending unit in the transmission pan....

most transmissions use returned converter oil as lube oil for the bushing and planetary gear sets.

it gives you the most accurate AVERAGE temp reading. As far as I know, every transmission manufacturer that uses a temp sensor has it inside the pan, usually on the valve body.
