Yes, there is a pressure in the trans that locks up the trans at a certain speed. There also may be a switch attached to the break pedal that unlocks the trans. If should work fine with a gas motor.

There is a 3rdgear pressure switch, and a brake switch on the gas pedal. You can wire it yourself, B&M makes a controller for the converter, Bow tie Automatic also makes one. Depends on how elaborate or cheap you want it to be
