starter gear replacement need to remove trans ?

I have a 455 w a th350 trans in a 72 cutlass

i looked in the 70 CSM and although it references the flexplate as a flywheel i could find no info on these terms....starter gear, flex plate, flywheel

do i have to separate the trans from the engine to replace the flexplate ? it appears mine has a bad spot on it ....

First you unbolt the torque convertor from the flexplate through the access underneath the car and slide it to the rear into the trans. Then unbolt the rear of the driveshaft and lower it to the ground, leave the yoke in the trans. Put a piece of plywood on a floor jack and place it under the pan, then disconnect the trans cooling lines and trans mount and slide the trans back a bit. You can support the trans with rope or bailing wire from above through a bolt hole in the transmission housing and pull the jack out to gain access. Then remove the flexplate bolts and pop it out.

Reverse the above process to reinstall.

You have to slide both the converter and the trans back in order to get enough clearance to get a wrench on the flexplate bolts.
