Slim Jim needs another rebuild?
Slim Jim needs another rebuild?
need help on slim jim 62 olds trans , had it rebuilt 4 years ago ran great , now this year when I got it out off storage it will not shift into 3rd gear and stay in gear it drops down in 2nd gear and will not go back to 3rd gear , had it back to shop that rebuilt it 4 years ago , ,they can't figure why it won't stay in 3rd gear . , does anybody have any ideas of how to fix it . .
Ripper, does the shop that rebuilt your transmission have an adjustment tool for the throttle valve? TV adjustment is critical for the Slim Jim.
BTW, I moved your post to a new thread so it gets more clicks.

got car back from shop , runs and shifts great for about 20 minutes then it starts slipping in high gear , took back to shop and he has no clue why its doing that , does anybody have any idea what to look for in the trans ,
Ripper, there are a few threads on our site with info on folks who might be able to rebuild that Slim Jim. You have to be willing to ship it across the nation to a specialty shop. Normal yahoos at Meineke will look at you like you're a Martian if you bring in your car with a Slim Jim. Here's a thread to start with:

Sounds to me that the governor G-2 passage has a problem when hot, or the valve body has a sticky valve when hot. (I am assuming that when the transmission cools down that it works correctly.)

Thanks going tomorrow to talk to him will ask him about what you said , last time I talked to him I got impression he doesn’t know what to do , he thinks it’s got to do with the parts , said it was hard to find parts for it , because there not much demand for slim Jim parts that they don’t make new parts for them , thanks again for the info ,
You should be able to get rebuild kits and a filter from Fatsco. Hard parts are going to have to come from a car in the junkyard.

Basics first - is the fluid level correct, taken when the fluid is hot? If not, correct and see if the problem goes away. If not, Next, change the fluid and filter and see if there is improvement. If not, use Steve's tool plus a shop manual and be sure the linkage adjustment is right on. Don't let that trans shop touch it until you have done all of this.
All that was done , I run extra cooler to the tranny , the guy that rebuilt it got in touch with a guy in Cali that knows a lot about problems with this trans , so we will see what he comes up with , thanks
well after he ran more test on it , took it for a ride and he did some adjusteing on it it still slips in high gear after driving it for about an half hour , he just doesn't know what else to do , I can't find anybody thats had this problem before so he can find a fix , he is one of the best trans shop in my erea , other trans shops around me do not even want to touch a slim jim , I would like to find some one that knows more about the slim jim and might have a solution to the problem ,

Thanks for your input, he doesn’t think it’s in the governor because it shifts good , he has had problems with other trans like what’s happening to mine it end up being a hair line crack in one of the parts that you could hardly see , he has check mine and can not find any cracks, I was told by the guy that does other work on the car to try F trans fluid, some of the old time racers use it because it was heavier, where gona try that and test run it again, see what happens, they use to put whale oil in before it was banded , at this point it has us scratching our heads , we even talked about putting at Chevy 350 in it but the cost is not worth it to me , only other thing would be just get rid of it , again thanks for your input , Dennis
If it has the aluminum governor then it could be the problem. There are rings on the governor and the ringlands wear really bad on the aluminum ones. They had cast iron replacements that fix this problem. Had mine rebuilt and a year later it was not shifting right and slipping. Took it back and he figured out that there was an update and the aluminum governors need replaced.
Thanks will past that on to the trans shop , at this point willing to try anything , we had talked about the governor he thought if it was that it wouldn’t shift as good as it does for the first 1/2 hour of driving, he did have a job on a truck did slip after driving for awhile that turned out to be a hair line crack in a part that was hard to see , he just couldn’t find any part with a crack, thanks again for your input ,

well tried every thing you guys talked about and still slips , got a hold of Ross Racing and going to swap slim jim for a th350 , cars no good if I can't drive it , my only other option is selling it not running or for parts , be about another month to get kit for the swap ,
A TH350 will not fit without major fabrication. Floor has to be cut out, new carpet.... Find a 200 C and go that route. It will fit under the stock floor pan and be more than capable of supporting the power of the 215
with Ross Racing kit I do not need to do that his kit will fit , I went with 350 instead of 400 because it gives a little more room around trans tunnel , I have talk to a few people that had it done , heres thread to swap -My New TH400 Compared To Slim Jim - ClassicOldsmobile.com

no problem ,if I were to use there kits out there would have to do body work , I was going to go with the other kit till I was told about Ross Racings kit , I was told about other trans that would be better but I had all ready ordered Ross's kit , takes couple months to get it made , thanks for the reply ,
update on 350 trans swap ,been waiting since November for Ross Racing to get me there kit for swapping out slim jim for a 350 chevey trans , . can't seem to get answers on why it is taking so long , when I put the money down he told me 5 weeks now its going on 3 months , . starting to think may never get car back on the road ,
I hope you paid with a credit card so you can deny charges if needed. Send Ross Racing an email and ask them to provide you a date when they should have the parts ready. If they don't answer your email that would be the time to consider denying charges.
FWIW, here's another option to get a modern tranmission behind your engine.

that kit takes a lot more work , went with Ross because its a lot less work , taking to people that had it done , ross is a great kit just didn't think it would take this long from what he had told me ,every time I call he says just another week , . dummy me did not pay with credit card , I guess i'm old school I believe in a mans word . . I just hope its not much longer ,
Hello Ripper I don' know if you got you tranny running yet, if not maybe this will help you get your car on the road again. I'm new to this forum and I'm having trouble with my tranny as well but mine is only a bad seal leak. I think I know someone knowledge that might be able to solve your problem. He's in his 80s and knows everything about the Slim Jim transmissions. He doesn't remove or install them anymore, but he still rebuilds them. He is in Southern California. His name is Russ. Vintage Transmission by Russ Stylvis Inc.24601 Willow Pass Dr Tahachapi, California 93561. rslvis@sbcglobal.net.
Phone # 805-432-1441 Let me know how it works out for you, Anthony

we finished the tranny swap , car runs great with the 350 in it , thanks for the information but sending it all the way to Ca to be rebuilt , unless he has a 62 olds to test it in theres no way to know if his rebuild works , I spent enough money and time on the slim jim . had to go , , thanks again
