Sealant Question

I have leak at the transmission dipstick tube on my 1956 Oldsmobile. Can anyone recommend a sealer that would work. I was thinking permatex.
Thanks,
Rick

If the tube is loose, sealer will only be a temporary fix... Most likely it is an O-Ring issue as mentioned above and should be changed...

I think in 1956 it was threaded into the pan, at least that's what the 1955 slantpan was. Long term it would be good to replace the tube if its damaged, what transmission does your car have in it?

I agree with the others. Remove the tube and see if there's an o-ring that can be replaced. If the tube is threaded into the transmission perhaps it just needs to be cleaned and re torqued.

Thanks for the suggestions. It is the Jetaway Hydra-Matic transmission. It is a tube that has a sleeve and a ridge. The tube is secured to a manifold bolt which broke causing it to come loose. I need to secure it but I was thinking of some type of sealer. I will check to see if it has an O ring. I really dread pulling the manifold to replace that bolt.

If I'm reading the parts book correctly, the 2nd type Jetaway used an "O" ring (part number 8617747) (0.725") on the filler pipe. I realize that dealing with that exhaust manifold can be a horrendous job, but you will have to do something to stabilize that tube or the vibration will continue to make a leaking problem. It would be nice if the manufacturers had used an anti-seize compound on all those exhaust manifold fasteners.
