Floor Shift console conversion

Guys:
I am in the process of installing a floor shift console unit from a 67 Cutlass into my 66 Cutlass Turbo 400 unit. I bought the cable, cable bracket and selector arm for a 67 unit, the problem I am having is the there is approx 3/4" difference in the mounting points between the bracket and arm. There is enough material on the selector arm to mount the pin in a different area and leave the cable bracket in the correct holes on the trans, or would it be better to leave the pin in the selector arm original hole and modify the cable bracket. I'm sure someone has run into this before, any help would be great.
Thanks, Ron 614 309 1513
